This is my most recent piece, close to being complete. Sadly it has been at this stage for the past five months as I have struggled to find the motivation to pick up a brush. It is from a photograph I took of a fishing boat in Maine back in the 1980's. A considerable amount of work goes into the finished painting; You can see the tonal study and two smaller watercolour sketches that guide the final work. This piece is fairly intricate as watercolours go but I'm happy with how it has progressed. As most artists will tell you, you have to keep painting or you loose your "touch", so I will have to put this piece to the side and get my hand back in before I get back to it. All I have to do is find the incentive to pick up that brush.

My work from last year is presently on show at the "Ship of Fools Gallery" in Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands, so If you happen to find yourself in the neighbourhood, please pop in and take a look. There are some wonderfully talented artists displaying their work there for this years summer exhibition.

Here are a couple of small sketch watercolours of one of the paintings I posted earlier. Once I am happy with the composition I will usually paint these to get familiar with the image prior to taking on the final piece. Firstly a black and white tonal study followed by introducing colour. There may be a number of these before I’m happy. Due to the fact that they are only “sketches”, it often turns out that they are painted with a little more freedom - an attractive looseness, true to the characteristics of watercolours that I really like. These will also be available at the Salty Dogs pop-up Christmas Show in Maldon, Essex from the 4th November, along with a number of my other sketches.

Here are some of the paintings that I have been working on. I have been concentrating on watercolour which proves to be a great deal more demanding than it at first appears. It has taken a fair while to come to grips with this tricky but rewarding medium. I still have a ways to go but I am starting to feel a little more confidant with it but would be happier if I managed to loosen up more which the medium demands - but that is contrary to my nature so a bit of a battle.
