Thought we’d close without a Poetry Night Staff Party?

2024 has been eventful but Poetry Night at 196 Victoria has been mid-week food for thought and much more for us this year. So we have to give thanks to this poetry community.

You’re invited to our very spontaneous, read: ULTIMATE YEAR-END-POETRY NIGHT!
We’re honored to have curated a space where we can unpack life through spoken word and timeless music. Shout out to our selecktas DJ Phanny, Andrea and Thando Nxumalo and our host, Zizipho Bam for holding space.

This stage has nurtured all of our words, from first-timers, to timers, authors, travellers, poet duos, singers, rappers and your favorite poet’s favorite poets. Each prompt has led to discourse, each poem a centerpiece, each snap a gift and every song an education. We are thankful to you all.

Let’s connect, create and commune in the name of poetry one last time this year. DJ Phanny will be on the vinyl, dinner is potluck style or order-in, drinks on sale and a holiday booksale of “Sunflowers for My Lovers”.

As we celebrate Youth Month, we want to shine the spotlight on some of the poets who use their voices to inspire change.

POETS, it’s time to use OUR VOICES for change!

Spoken word asks us to speak up for the silenced but also to speak the truth! As we make our marks and choose our future leaders this month, the poets must reflect and respond to the state of our nation.

Join us this election day at 196 Victoria Road for a night of radical provocative poetry, the prompt for the evening is: OUR VOICES

If you feel called to perform, sign up on the Google form . Prepare two poems, one responding to the prompt and another of your choice.
Remember to budget for our book sale and support our local self-published authors. Food and drinks will also be available at the bar. Tickets available on quicket and at the door.

We’re excited to have our selector Thando return to set the vibes on vinyl. On the book table, we have Liza Scholtz, an actor, poet and writer born and based in Cape Town. Liza has a passion for combining the mediums of poetry and film, she is the author of “Remember her hands” which will be available for sale at R220 a copy.

Join us for an intimate event in the Bokaap. We will be swimming in vibrations of a piano sound journey by Jeffrey Munks before he picks it up into a melodic techno live set. This is sure to be quite the sonic experience!

DJ Phanny & Watching Love will make sure the vinyl are spinning when you arrive & before you leave.

Doors open at 6 and there will be bar with all the usual suspects. Since this is a fundraiser event in collaboration with The Giant Sandworm Collective, entrance is donation-based starting at R50.

Come one, come all to Planet Poetry! 🌚🌝

We are excited to announce that we will be collaborating with once again to bring you an evening of poetic delights! ✨
The theme for the evening is: METAMORPHOSIS 🐛🦋 so get ready to bloom!

Our main act is who will be blessing us with a few poems from her recent book ‘Sunflowers For My Lovers’ 🌻 (it will also be on sale that night so make sure to bring some moola)

Entrance to the event is R20 and will go to the poets. Please make sure to bring some picnic blankets, snacks and your own drinks 🍉🫖🍷
