This week the talented, 25 year-old Kagiso Reuben was welcomed at Huppelland for their annual Artist introduction. It forms part of the preschool’s annual art exhibition, where the toddlers interpret an artist’s work.

Kagiso was masterful, talking passionately about his naive portraits and fielding toddler questions. Looking forward to both what Kagiso produces next and how the Huppellanders interpret his work.

Ooooh look at all this beauty that I recently snapped up at Amy Ayanda’s studio. I am thrilled to share the work of the Capetonian musician artist, who requires no introduction. I just love her colour, vibrance and effortless (looking) outcome. Hope you are loving these visuals as much as I do.

Just this past weekend, I spoke to someone about the universal love for landscape artworks. With that in mind, I thought I’d share some beautiful shades from Ruschka’s palette, Corner Window. What a captivating result - I love Ruschka’s take on this classic subject.

Historically, landscape paintings have played a significant role in art. During the Renaissance, they served as backdrops for religious and mythological scenes. It wasn’t until the 17th century in the Netherlands that landscapes became a celebrated genre. The Impressionists later revolutionised landscape painting with their focus on light and vibrant colours.

Landscapes have always had a special place in our hearts. They capture nature’s beauty, evoke peace, and let us escape into serene vistas. They remind us of places we’ve been and dream of places we’d like to go. Although Ruschka occasionally explores landscapes, I love their vibrant colours and emotive compositions, perfectly embodying this timeless appeal. This one is no exception to that rule

There is something to be said for a heaving bookshelf, filled with memories, stories, and paraphernalia collected over the years. Our bookshelf was filled over time. I distinctly remember Matthew popping out to charity shops on weekends during Covid times to buy books to fill the shelves. It was probably a welcome escape from the babies at home, but also the thrill of seeing what you’ll find. He would return with boxes of wonderful, well-loved books, for next to nothing.

I love including art on these shelves, adding another dimension and certainly some beauty. Seen here is Jackie Veldman’s latest blue delft classics, framed in beech to make that shade of blue pop. Going at R2000 each, I consider them a mid-winter pick me up or a thoughtful gift.

Wishing you a happy weekend!

Sage, emerald, chartreuse, olive, mint, forest, sea foam, jade, lime, moss, apple, pistachio, avocado, fern, hunter, teal, pine, pear, celadon, shamrock, asparagus, grass, kelly, jungle, army, sap, malachite, beryl, basil, eucalyptus, pickle, and viridian.

What a list of beautiful names, all belonging to the family of greens. From green rooms to good luck, chlorophyll to tranquility and calm, I believe green is considered to be sacred in Islam tradition. In the art world it is rather (in)famously challenging to work with in paintings. But that just adds to its allure, right?

With that mouthful, I’m sharing paintings in all shades of this fascinating hue, including two new artworks by the wondrous Emma Nourse. Can’t wait to hear what you think!

Following the hugely successful run Hugo’s Social Club has enjoyed, Elisca & Co is adding to the space as we speak. I’m being cryptic, but can’t wait to share more on this project soon!

For now I’m sharing some shots of the existing space. I personally love the carved wooden restaurant counter, not seen here. Pop in if you haven’t done so yet - and enjoy the view, art and delicious food x

When visiting Elsabe Milandri’s studio, I spotted this fresh, pretty nature-inspired painting series called The Talk hiding in her studio drawers. The series was inspired by a heartwarming school visit by the artist’s horticulturist husband, Stefan. He arrived with a box of seeds and plants, showing the children how to grow and care for them, explaining the magic of germination. The kids were captivated, asking thoughtful questions.

One curious student asked how bread is made. This struck a cord, as Stefan also loves baking. He detailed the process of making bread, intertwining the lifecycle of seeds with the bread we eat. It was a profound moment, feeling like a glimpse into the future of these young minds learning about nature and sustenance.

The Talk series captures the essence of this experience, reflecting on the notes Elsabe took during the session. It’s a beautiful blend of knowledge, curiosity, and the wonder of growth.

This work is my favourite, beautifully framed in Beech, available online now.

All the feels for Jackie’s beautiful newly released bird series. The Cape Town-based artist says the series reminds her of her childhood growing up in Botswana, surrounded by an abundance of bird life.

Following on the huge success of Ruschka du Toit’s latest show, I am super chuffed to release these beautiful artworks by the woman with her mysterious flowers. Ruschka’s work never ceases to captivate and intrigue with its depth and beauty.

I’m thrilled to share these mesmerising new additions with you. Enjoy!

I am a big fan of Elsabé Milandri’s work, especially her stunning landscapes and tree scenes, like the “Barometer II” seen here. Her painterly style and unassuming disposition from such an accomplished artist make for a wonderful combination.

Elsabé’s work spans observational drawing, atmospheric colour, and the visual language of epistemology, searching out the connections between ideas, figures, and texts. She draws inspiration from her immediate surroundings, including motherhood, relationships, home rituals, planted environments, and weather conditions. Embracing the unpredictable elements of the creative process, she investigates through play, thinking by writing, and feeling through the physical movement of mark-making.

She completed her BA in Fine Art at the University of Pretoria in 2002 and a Masters in Fine Art, New Media at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, UCT, in 2006. Elsabé has held solo exhibitions at renowned galleries, including the AVA in Cape Town and Smith Studio. Her work is part of private collections in the USA, UK, and throughout Europe.

Currently living and working in Cape Town with her husband and four children, Elsabé continues to inspire with her beautiful and thought-provoking art.

Currently gracing the walls of Anatomy Design in Greenpoint, Chloë Townsend’s “Ever Watchful” (2022) is a stunning testament to her unique artistic journey. Perhaps better known for her slow fashion leather accessories under the label Missibaba, Chloë’s shift to art making flows from the same creative source as her renowned leather-crafted goods.

“Ever Watchful” features leather patchworked together with appliqué suede lattice, stitched on canvas and framed in Kiaat. Brass stud detailing on the eyes and brass pyramid stud detailing on the leather frame add a touch of elegance. The piece, measuring 170 x 74.5cm, beautifully encapsulates her deep fascination with the natural world and the intricate balance of ecosystems.

Chloë’s work is always a blend of boldness and playfulness, with her leather pieces being particularly striking. This piece, in particular, serves as a portal to the complex beauty of nature, inviting viewers into an imaginary world of layered wonders.

Be sure to visit Anatomy Design to see this captivating piece in person. Chloë Townsend continues to inspire with her creativity and vision.

Happy Birthday to my dear friend and talented artist, Michael Amery! We’ve come a long way since meeting in high school (always known as my brother’s friend), and it’s been incredible to watch your journey. The master of tree paintings, among other things, turned forty yesterday.

Capetonian Michael completed a BA in Applied Design at the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography in 2007. He’s worked as a graphic designer in Cape Town, transitioning from full-time to part-time as his art has gained more interest. His first solo show, Trees by Man, at David Krut Projects in April 2016, sold out immediately! And his sell-out shows just continue…

The visuals here are from a recent art event at Latitude Aparthotels, where we commissioned a pink mountain diptych in acrylic on canvas for their lounge. The space has a rockstar view, but one could argue that these artworks steal the show.

Personally, I can’t wait to see what comes next from this man’s studio. Happy Birthday, Michael!

I’ve had the great pleasure of spending a week in the countryside, surrounded by orchards, vineyards and dinners interrupted by owls calling. Bliss!
In the meanwhile I’ve been dreaming up a kitchen featuring Tara’s fruit inspired artworks. I’m convinced this cheeky, same sized pair would look incredible side by side. Happy viewing of these beautiful visuals 🍋

I’m delighted to introduce the work of abstract artist Jana Wasserman. Jana showed me a room full of beautiful artworks and I picked nine of my favourites, which are now framed and ready to go ranging between R4000 and R6500.

Jana’s art explores the beauty in everyday life, drawing inspiration from nature and relationships. She turns ordinary moments into beautiful abstract pieces, showing us the hidden beauty in the mundane. Jana’s work is all about sharing joy and colour, capturing harmony from her surroundings and inner feelings.

It certainly feels like winter is upon us and these gentle tones remind me of blooms as the temperature drops. While peonies don’t bloom in the winter, their lush, full blossoms remind me of the beauty and renewal that comes with the changing seasons.

Peonies have a rich history and are beloved in many cultures. In Chinese tradition, they are considered the “king of flowers” and symbolize honor and wealth.

I love Austen’s take on these classic blooms.

One of my favourite Kirsten Lilford artworks has just returned from my framer. Pure joy in shades of pink, making reference to my favourite the Mount Nelson of course.

Famously the Mount Nelson’s second manager, the Italian Aldo Renato, celebrated the end of the First World War by painting the hotel pink. Pink hotels became popular throughout Europe for the next few decades, and so their pink walls remained.

Being my favourite colour, I am thrilled to have this pink beauty on my doorstep.

Back to work Monday, I thought I’d start your week with some beautiful visuals by Amber Moir. Today I’m reflecting on Latitude’s co-working space, which was transformed by Elisca & co, with art sourced by Source Artistry in 2022.

Amber Moir’s monotypes, seen here, are a beautiful exploration of colour, form, and texture. Her technique involves painting watercolors on a sheet of polypropylene plastic, then pressing it onto calico with a 100kg pitch roller, resulting in unique and vibrant pieces. These artworks are full of unexpected outcomes and intricate details that capture the imagination. Amber’s work is a testament to the beauty of risk and experimentation in art, creating pieces that are both striking and evocative.

Wishing you a happy week ahead!

Isn’t it incredible what nature scenes can do for the soul? I was lucky enough to receive these nature-inspired beauties by Ludwich Olivier, all the way from Nature’s Valley, this week. His medium of choice is gouache on glass, creating a striking visual effect with the contrast between the matte finish of the gouache and the glossy finish of the glass.

Long have I been on Shakes’ case to make his work available, and we’re finally here! I’ve been a fan of Shakes Tembani’s work for goodness knows how long: His distinctive stripes and his colours that pop. Then there is the most wonderfully kind soul behind that paintbrush.

In a recent conversation at Latitude he told us about how David Hockney and Paul Smith inspired his work. Can you tell… That night he also shared this magnificent with me, so much so that I took a snap of his phone.

As a bonus point, I recently saw and loved the image of a Sarah Ord interior that dons two of his 1x1m works behind a couch. This image so beautifully captured by the Vignette team has my heart. I hope you love it as much as I do x

Golly this week has been a riot with these Gossip prints flying out. Stephanie created this oil painting in 2019, and loved it so much she turned it into a 50-edition print. It is just so expressive and joyous. Further the title gets me every time - of course I’m dying to know what the skinder is all about.

My framer and I framed one in beech yesterday for a change, picking up the sand and skin tones beautifully. I love them both, which is your favourite?
