Time to reunite people and give them hope post the global pandemic - a meaningful International Sculpture Festival with a positive message.

The brilliance of a sculpture festival is that the works have a phy

sical three dimensional presence that creates an interactive and wholesome experience, especially since so many of us have felt disconnected during and after the global Covid-19 pandemic.

Another great sculpture garden you should consider visiting - Quin Sculpture Garden in Alexandria.
Alexandria is a small farming town in the Eastern Cape of South Africa and is situated 100 km North East of Port Elizabeth

Quin Sculpture Garden is home to the work of Maureen Quin, a deeply passionate and emotionally engaged artist.

Maureen is an artist who expresses a unique sensitivity in form as well as energy for life through her sculptures. Her work is characterized by its dynamic quality and communicates successfully with its surrounding space.

Each sculpture is an exciting journey, starting with a vague concept, sketching it to achieve a visual form, building the armature, fleshing it out and having it cast in bronze.
In this process of creating Maureen uses her talents, experience, and intuition to guide her until she is satisfied within herself that the sculptural form she is created, moves in space and is in harmony with her vision.

In many studies Maureen endeavour to capture the rapport between humans and the animal kingdom by combining the two to create sculptures that are uniquely her own abstract expressive approach. Creating and searching for the ultimate realization of her vision is the fulfilment of her life.

At 86 Maureen Quin is still an active sculptress, and her work can be viewed in her gallery and garden in Alexandria, Eastern Cape, South Africa, or at , Clock Tower, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town.

Interesting Facts

The Must-See Outdoor Art Installations of 2020

Last September, the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum underwent a makeover of epic proportions when Korean artist Lee Ufan installed ten site-specific sculptures around the cylindrical building's exterior. On display through September 13, 2020, “Lee Ufan: Open Dimensions” gives visitors the opportunity to experience sleek steel and stone artworks that blend seamlessly into the museum’s 4.3-acre site beside the National Mall.

That’s not the only outdoor art gracing the Smithsonian campus. Since May, bright, storybook-like houses and giant dragonflies, grasshoppers and nests have spread among the museum properties. All 14 installations are part of an exhibition organized by the Smithsonian Gardens that explores a central theme: “protecting habitats protects life.”

Sikunye
Sikunye (which means Togetehr in Xhosa) is our Iconic figure who represents the spirit of our festival. We celebrate one of the most diverse countries in the world, and Sikunye the multicolored and gender-less sculpture stands for how Art unites us.
Sikunye has its roots in ancient minimalistic African art (Boli) but also refers to one of the most iconic antique Greek sculptures – Venus of Milo believed to depict Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty.
Sikunye will be all over the place, follow the journey...

More about the Hermit Pendant...

The Travelling Hermit, originally an ink drawing by

Humanity and Hermit Crabs share something in common: We are both ensconced by a shell. The Hermit Crab by a literal one and we humans by a metaphorical one. The metaphor in this case being the habitable atmosphere we live in.
Unlike the Hermit Crab, we cannot abandon our ‘shell’ once we have outgrown it.
Unlike the Hermit Crab we cannot abandon our habitat to find better territories to live in.
We are bound to this world and there is only one. We do not have the luxury to easily shrug off our responsibilities like an old shell.
If our population keeps proliferating we will destroy our precious atmosphere and oceans and the Shell that has protected us through millennia will vanish: We will not survive.

FYI There is also a 3m High Hermit crab in Hermanus, Gearings Point. Go check it out!

WIlliam Sweetlove born in Ostend, in 1949, is a Belgium Artist who is known for his eco friendly animal art. With remarkable imagery, he mockingly denounces narrow mindedness and addresses our basic humanity; our world is a borrowed thing, our actions should never be at the expense of animals.
Throughout his career Sweetlove has sought to further the concept of Art as an antidote to overconsumption and overproduction.
He has presented his work at over 600 exhibitions worldwide.
He was commissioned by the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens for an exhibition of more than 60 penguin sculptures.
Sweetlove's sculptures made from recycled plastic or metais - are a whimsical representation of fantasy and fact. The multicoloured animal artworks look like oversized toys at first but the contrasting additions such as boots, backpacks and PET bottles disrupt our childhood associations. These suggest survival gear as water shortage has become one of the greatest global challenges. Though amusing, Sweetlove's animal kingdom reflects a serious interest in the future of the environment. His sculptures express his concern over the rapid climate change that could lead to catastrophic decline in available nature resources.

The ceiling of the arch is made of translucent fabric with printed text. When the sun shines through the fabric, words are projected on the floor.
