CASPER DE VRIES!
The well-known South African comedian, actor and entertainer's paintings are now exhibited at Susan Kemp Art Studio and Gallery at 16 Queen Street. Known to generations of South Africans for his extraordinary talent, Casper reveals another, deeply personal side of his creativity through his art.
He first picked up a paintbrush in 2011, almost unexpectedly, while visiting fellow artist Michele Nigrini in Rosendal in the Free State. What began as a spontaneous moment quickly became an intense creative passion. With no formal training in the visual arts, Casper approached painting instinctively — allowing colour, emotion, memory and imagination to guide him.
His work is difficult to place into a single category. Casper moves comfortably between realism, abstraction, portraits and expressive interpretations of nature, creating a body of work that is as diverse as the stories that inspire it. He has described his approach as art without pretence — painting because something moves, fascinates or inspires him.
