SHOW DATES: 2012/03/23 - 2012/04/22

The production was commissioned by German Institution (Goethe Institute), Siemens Stiftung for Belgian Spoken Word Festival themed “Speeches of the World”.

Scripted by: Mpumelelo Paul Grootboom & Aubrey Sekhabi Directed by: Mpumelelo Paul Grootboom

This production is a kind of rhetorical analysis of Thabo Mbeki’s legacy through some key events during his presidency and some of his most famous speeches. The play explores Mbeki’s art of persuasion (and lack of) and attempts, at the same time, to satirically represent the effect of his policies and style of governance on normal day to day citizens of the New South Africa.

SHOW DATES: 2012/06/12 - 2012/06/29

Melodrama originally meant what the word hints at drama with music. It’s a form of theatre in which music is used to shape the audiences’s emotional responses to what happened on stage.

Nowadays melodrama has come to mean something else- dram in which characters are one dimensional, atmosphere is threatening and the plot relies on a series of coincidences. For all these apparent weaknesses, the best melodrama, as used in tense dramas like Sorry, Wrong Number, can have a strong grip on its audience, making us keen to see what happens next.

SHOW DATES: 2012/05/09 - 2012/05/27

Should Remi, the first of his tribe to go to university, return to his people from the city? Should he return to his Thoni, his brother’s widow, whom he has had to marry under tribal custom?

Should Remi, the first of his tribe to go to university, return to his people from the city? Should he return to his Thoni, his brother’s widow, whom he has had to marry under tribal custom?

Or should he continue to be a “black hermit” in the town, visiting the night club with his friend Jane? Should he be supporting the Africanist Party when his people feel that colonial oppression has just been replaced by another form? These are the dramatic conflicts in this play.
