Athol Fugard's No Good Friday

Athol Fugard's No Good Friday The Wits School of Art, Division of Dramatic Art, is staging a student production of Athol Fugard’ The play grapples with three issues; love, dreams and murder!

A South African classic, the play will be directed by Dr Samuel Ravengai, a senior lecturer within the department. No Good Friday was first performed on 30 August 1958, in the Johannesburg Bantu Men’s Social Centre by Athol Fugard with Cornelius Mabaso, Gladys Sibisi, Bloke Modisane, Preddie Ramphele, Stephen Moloi, Ken Gampu, Daniel Poho, Mike Mokone, Zakes Mokae and Sol Rachilo... most of who be

came luminaries in South African theatre. Rebecca is a young woman in love with Willie, who is on the verge of realising his dream of becoming a black intellectual by graduating with a BA degree. When he is about to finish his degree, he realises that all the benefits that were supposed to accrue to him were just a pipe dream. He loses his mind and his love for Rebecca. He despairs of life, questions the existence of God and the notion that education could be as important as the pursuit of freedom. His pessimism is all pervasive as he questions the notion of “doing good” in an existence that seems not to reward goodness - maybe freedom lies elsewhere? While grappling with this dilemma, a murder is committed right on Willie’s doorstep by Shark, the local Mafia Boss whose charming exterior belies a violent nature. The protection racket run by Shark conducts its operations every Friday evening. There is no ‘happy’ Friday as Shark causes havoc by intimidating every resident into paying a ‘protection fee’. When this rule of the jungle results in the murder of Tobias, ethical and religious dilemmas emerge. Should he be reported to the police where he holds ‘shares’ or will there be merely another murder to silence the uproar? The answers to these questions lie in the production of No Good Friday. Free parking is available in Senate House; the entrance is on Jorissen Street, Braamfontein. VENUE: Wits Downstairs Theatre, East Campus, Braamfontein, an experimental black box venue. Double Trouble...And we mean that in the best possible way. Jovan Muthray and Kelly Eksteen, both 3rd year Performing Arts students at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

Muthray has been involved in devising shows for the S*x Actually Festival. He played the lead in "The Interview" which received critical acclaim in the Sunday Times and other local newspapers. One of his best roles include Osip in "The Government Inspector", Karrens in the Afrikaans Stage performance of "Skroothonde" and Njord in August Strindberg's "The Father" directed by Makhaola Ndebele.

For Eksteen, our leading lady Rebecca, theatre and acting has been a passion of hers since the day she saw her first pantomime. She began performing in high school and won the Best Actress Award twice including a nomination for Best Actress at the RAPS Festival in 2010. Eksteen has always known that drama was her destined path. No Good Friday is her first official Wits production, but trust us, one would never tell. She's just that good☆

Need another reason why you just cannot afford to miss this show; Sibusiso Mkhize. This aspiring performer and film-maker from Meadowlands Soweto, Johannesburg has been an accomplished performer since an early age with a couple of performance credits under his belt.

Mkhize's love for the arts began in 2003 at Harmony Primary School where he took part in a number of school productions and public-speaking competitions. Driven by his passion for performing, he then enrolled at The National School of Arts in 2006 to further his studies. In his matric year (2010), Mkhize was part of the school's (NSA) main production, Sarafina, where he played the role of Sabela. The all-student cast was spotted and recruited by Somizi Mhlongo to partake in the opening and closing ceremony of the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament at Soccer City.

Currently a 2nd year BADA (Bachelor of Arts in Dramatic Arts) student at the University of the Witwatersrand Johannesburg, Mkhize has appeared in television productions like Soul Buddies, Cooking Magic, and was a cast member of the Oscar-winning film Tsotsi. He has also worked as a voiceover artist for Fundaninathi in Music, Radio Highveld, Wicked Expo, YOTV, Kelloggs and Knorr.

Early this year (2014), Mkhize was casted in a devised play, Maid in Mzansi, which was selected by the Wits Theatre to represent the University at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

In No Good Friday, Mkhize plays Pinkie, and has done an amazing job at it. We can't wait for you to it. 9 Days to go till opening!

Meet our beautiful and talented actress, Bongiwe Mazibuko. This 21 year old boasts as proudly South African and is currently completing her BA PVA (Bachelor of Arts in Performing and Visual Arts) at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. Mazibuko has a firing passion for theatre and television; and always gives her best in every task taken, be it small or big. "One should never judge the quantity but rather the quality of the work produced", she says. No Good Friday is Mazibuko's first production and she plays the character, Gladys. Her positive and humble nature is certainly contagious. We can't wait for you to see this upcoming star doing what she was born to do on our stage☆
