We published this Bohlokong Landscape Report in August 2025, and there was very little reaction to it. Unfortunately, we also missed a few businesses in the report. Considering the direction things are now taking, the findings should make more sense than ever.

We really need people who can guide our business community, especially young entrepreneurs in the townships. Otherwise, we will continue repeating the same mistakes over and over again, which will ultimately lead to failures.

Where are the people who are tasked with leading us? Where are the business people of Bohlokong Township? Where are the managers, directors, engineers, doctors, fathers, mothers, pastors, taxi owners, and other community leaders? What role are you playing in developing our society?

We are still facing challenges in employing more female youth due to the nature of our work.

Things ultimately come down to economics.

We hope our wonderful youth take this into consideration in whatever decisions they make, who they choose to follow, and what they choose to support. Do not use popularity as a criterion for decision making. We are in this situation partly because of that.

We have always emphasized one thing: economics.

Economics matters.

For every action, there are consequences, and by now we should understand that those consequences can be either positive or negative.

A couple of months ago, we provided data and an analysis of businesses in Bohlokong Township, Bethlehem. By now, there should have been discussions and deliberations around that information. In fact, all townships should have conducted similar analyses.

For example, what will happen after the action is taken? Who owns the business properties being rented out for business activities? What rent is being paid? Who will be the suppliers of goods, items, raw food, etc. What will the pricing structures look like? What about transportation, deliveries, and many other issues?

Engagements with different departments and stakeholders should have already taken place regarding funding and other forms of support.

This is how you prepare for the consequences of your actions, through analysis, research, planning, and preparation. This should be part of the core work of economic development departments.

Adults and leaders should be at the forefront of holding, supporting, mentoring, and guiding the youth.

There is no time.

We often encourage young people to get into business because entrepreneurship is one of the most effective ways out of poverty. However, the current system makes it extremely difficult to start and operate a successful business. The chances of failure are very high.

In many ways, the system appears to favour employment over entrepreneurship. Unrealistic requirements from funders and commercial banks, compliance challenges with SARS, favouritism, and money lost within the system are among the obstacles.

Despite these challenges, we have resilient business people, especially from our townships. They have survived, and they will continue to survive until they achieve their destiny. It is only a matter of time. Keep believing. It is in the hands of young people.

A possible project that could create massive employment opportunities for young people in townships.

Sections of Bohlokong Township are under water, especially low-lying areas such as Vuka, parts of Old Location, Loso, and others. This may be due to some of the following factors:

* Climate change.
* Expansion of Bohlokong Township.
* Blocked culvert drains.
* Township design and planning.

In the past, many of the high-lying areas where houses have now been built were open land covered with trees, allowing much of the rainwater to be absorbed into the ground. Due to the expansion of the township, water now runs down into low-lying areas and accumulates there.

There are currently limited water control measures to redirect excess water, apart from valleys being built. There is a massive need for additional culvert drains, bridges, and stormwater infrastructure to redirect and manage water flow.

Many houses in low-lying areas experience moisture seeping up from underneath during periods of heavy rainfall. If this issue does not receive urgent attention, it could have serious consequences. Each year seems to bring increased rainfall, leading to more flooding as a result of climate change.

For example, reports suggest that Cape Town is bracing for severe winter flooding and is already taking precautionary measures. This could mean that we may also experience worse flooding during the summer months. We all saw what happened last year.

Motsekuwa section in Bohlokong township has experienced severe flooding, and the situation is likely to worsen if no action is taken. Do we wait for the problem to become a disaster, or do we act now?

This may also be the case in many other townships across the country.

Local civil engineers should already be aware of these challenges. Young people are encouraged to engage with their local municipalities regarding possible employment and infrastructure development opportunities linked to flood prevention and stormwater management projects.

And yet we struggle to raise a simple R5,000 for youth businesses, entrepreneurship, and development programmes.

Not a single company is willing to make even a small donation, despite the fact that we all support and buy from them.

Young people, please observe, learn, and act. Learn how system work, the very system you support, often without even realizing it.

You have seen our previous posts regarding businesses support and sponsorships.

One day, all will be well but you need be brave and act.

Feeling sad, but still looking beyond the present.

Let's open our township businesses for 48 hours a day, six days a week, especially those owned by young people.

This could create additional employment opportunities (rotational basis), increase income, and help reduce crime, particularly property break-ins and theft, as there would be more people operating and monitoring activities at night.

NB: We are not referring to businesses that would disturb residents' sleep during the night.

Imagine if food related businesses could have breakfast readily available for people going to work early in the morning.

As we always say, things will be alright one day, but it is up to us, especially young people, to make them right.

We learn from other developed countries and share that knowledge with our communities. Let us continue finding practical ways to grow our local economy and create opportunities.

16 June 2026 event.
Part of our 16 June 2026 programme involves identifying people who can help train young people in some of the following skills:
* Bricklaying
* Cellphone repairs
* Welding
* Pothole patching
* Carpentry
* First Aid
* Sewing
* Panel beating
* And many more
At this stage, we can only afford to pay for trainers, venues, and some of the equipment required for training purposes.

Some of the important questions that need to be addressed include:

What will happen after the training?
What will the selection criteria be?
How will participants benefit in the long term?

We believe these and other concerns can be discussed and resolved during the event on 16 June 2026.

For example, we know of DJs who are also qualified welders. There are many talented people in our communities with valuable skills that can be shared with young people.

This is a challenging initiative, and we cannot do it alone. We need your support, ideas, and participation to make it a success.
