What an unforgettable evening at the KUESTA Gala Concert! Our ChoirFest Productions team had the absolute privilege of watching some of South Africa's finest voices share the stage. It takes immense dedication and countless hours of preparation to achieve this level of artistry, and seeing these singers come together was a beautiful reminder of the power of community in music.

A massive congratulations to these fantastic featured ensembles and their visionary conductors:

University of the Free State Choir (Werner Stander)
University of Johannesburg Choir (Sizwe Mondlane)
Stellenbosch University Choir (André van der Merwe)
North-West University Choir (Kobus Venter)

What is KUESTA?
KUESTA is a university choral festival that officially became a formal body, the KUESTA Choral Society, in 1989 with six South African universities as its permanent core. Held every two years on a different campus, the festival invites university choirs to sing for one another across two cycles—one lighter and one more serious—before a public closing gala concert. The weekend also includes social events and workshops unique to the host campus. Importantly, KUESTA has never been a competition. Instead, it focuses on offering exceptional singing alongside a strong sense of friendship and community.

Celebrating incredible local choral talent right here at home. 🌍

We are still thinking about this stunning moment from the 2024 Boston ChoirFest in Bellville, Cape Town. The talented singers of DF Akademie Choir poured their absolute hearts into Franco Prinsloo’s Afrikaans masterpiece, "Mag die Bome Groen Bly" (May the Trees Remain Green).

It is performances like this that remind us of the profound strength of our local music community and the beauty of sharing our heritage.

Original Afrikaans:
Mag die bome groen bly
en die sterre wit,
en mag daar altyd mense wees
wat mekaar sonder skaamte in die oë kan kyk -
want die lewe is 'n asem lank
en die sterre op die Anderplek donker.

English Translation:
May the trees remain green
and the stars white,
and may there always be people
who can look each other in the eyes without shame -
for life is but a breath long
and the stars in the Otherplace are dark

"Now Thank We All Our God" (originally "Nun danket alle Gott") is one of the most famous Christian hymns of thanksgiving. It was written by Martin Rinkart around 1636 during the devastation of the Thirty Years' War. Despite facing famine, plague, and conducting up to 50 funerals a day—including his own wife's — Rinkart wrote this text as a testament to abiding trust in God

Verse 1 (English)
Now thank we all our God with heart and hands and voices
Who wondrous things has done, in whom His world rejoices
Who from our mothers' arms has blessed us on our way
With countless gifts of love and still is ours today.

Verse 2 (Afrikaans)
O God so ryk en goed, gee ons solank ons lewe
Altyd 'n blye hart, as dit U wil is, vrede
Laat U genade ons beveilig teen gevaar
In donker ure ons van struikeling bewaar

Verse 3 (English)
All praise and thanks to God, the Father now be given,
The Son and Spirit blest, who reign in highest heaven
The one eternal God, whom heaven and earth adore
For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.
