The Stage is looking forward to hosting the extremely talented Anton Calitz!
Booking essential: WhatsApp Selena on 072 215 2727.

Anton Calitz is a South African singer-songwriter, actor, and educator, renowned for his distinctive musical style and compelling performances. His career, spanning over three decades, has significantly influenced the South African folk and rock music scenes.

Early Life and Career

Anton Calitz began his musical journey in 1989, performing in the late-night slot at the iconic It's Country venue in Evatt Street. His unique blend of vocals, guitar, harmonica, and pan flutes quickly garnered attention, leading to performances at folk music clubs, arts festivals, and intimate venues across South Africa.

"Dead Slugs and Strawberries"

In the early 1990s, Calitz premiered his debut show,
"Dead Slugs and Strawberries."

This original music production was showcased at various venues, including performances in Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, Windhoek, and at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe between 1991 and 1996.

The show highlighted Calitz's ability to craft evocative narratives through song, blending romantic, comedic, and socio-political themes.

From 1990 to 2010, Calitz staged nine original music shows at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown/Makanda, earning widespread recognition for his thought-provoking performances. Notable productions during this period include "Curve Balls and Crooked Hearts" (1995), and "Kwaaihoek Stories" (2007–2009).

In 2013, Calitz co-founded the band Silverhorse with veteran musicians Keith Yoko, Cliffy Francis, and Sandy Robbie. The group performed music r***e shows in Port Elizabeth, most notably "Tonight’s the Night," a tribute to Neil Young, until disbanding in 2016.

Calitz continues to perform as a solo artist, "Tunes You Thought you Knew" his routine which showcases both new material as well as reimagined Neil Young, Juluka and Gypsy kings songs amongst his own.
