High above the Karoo, fueled by the Indian and Atlantic oceans, monolithic skyscapes form in unending variation. It is into this landscape, 67 years ago, that Kobus van der Walt was born and served as a continuous backdrop until finally it inspired the beginning of painting in 2015. His journey in the interim took him to the Air Force after graduating from Potchefstroom University (now North West University). While serving, he qualified as a meteorologist which deepened his understanding and fascination with weather systems. From there he moved into education, culminating in holding school principal positions for 12 years. Retiring early at 50, Kobus started theological post graduate studies at the NWU. Kobus, now pastor of Three Rivers Reformed Baptist Church, Vereeniging is married to Jeanne and they have three sons, two daughters in law and five grandchildren. His work, these stunning landscapes, is shaped by these many lives led and without formal arts training. There is a freedom that is found with his more abstract approach. It is clear that with experience, his work is growing in vigour and spontaneity. Contact Kobus at: [email protected]
