Such a beautiful day and yet you can really feel the seasons changing. 🍂
All the animals seem to be on the move today, travelling in groups and large numbers. The ground is every colour of green, brown and golden yellow and so I decided to do a quick study of what’s happening around me.
While my paint was drying, groups of deer and ruffed grouse (partridges😅)came walking by. I guess they wanted to help me make my point!
Soon the sandhill cranes will be gone for the winter and that always makes me a little sad. It’s a beautiful time of year but I’m not quite ready to say goodbye to it.❤️

Every once in a while I’m tempted to try other mediums like oils or acrylics but it’s always watercolour that keeps me. It’s so fresh and spontaneous, and full of surprises.
Once the water and pigment get moving, you can’t really control what happens and there’s very little room for corrections. You learn to quite literally “go with the flow”, and let the paint do its thing.
It can be incredibly satisfying and at times pretty frustrating. But that’s part of what makes it so rewarding when everything comes together, and it’s better than you even imagined.

“Colours of the North”-West Bluff, Gore Bay

This watercolour, painted on 100% cotton paper, is the other half of a diptych. Together, the two paintings create one continuous view across the Bay toward the North Channel of Lake Huron.

I love views like this that draw you in and keep you looking. It’s the kind of beauty I never seem to tire of.

This happy carefree piece, “A Place to Dream,” was such a joy to paint.
I love the sunsets off the east bluffs of the North Channel. They never get old. There’s something about being there at the end of the day that makes it easy to release the tension of the day and simply dream.
The evening I began this painting I felt so much love in my heart. The still warmth of the late summer sunshine on my face, the soft glow of the long shadows all around me… it left me with such a feeling of hope and peace.
Every sunset is beautiful, but this one stayed with me.

A Place to Dream is a 14” × 24” original watercolour, with an outside frame dimension of 20” × 30”.

It’s looking for its new home. ❤️
DM me for details.

Prints are also available.

A colour wheel is such a simple exercise but there’s something about mixing colours, watching new ones appear and seeing how they work together that gets my creative brain moving again. 🎨
It’s also a great way to utilize the backs of paintings gone wrong.😅
And doing it in a patch of sunshine by the window makes it even better. ☀️

Did you see the Harvest Moon last night? 🌕 So bright and beautiful it almost makes you want to cry. I love summer so much, but wow what a privilege it is to experience every season. Nature in all its glory is such a remarkable thing. And I still find it hard to wrap my mind around the fact that while we’re welcoming autumn here in the Northern Hemisphere, spring is beginning for those in the Southern Hemisphere. The changing of seasons happening in opposite directions around the world at the very same time. Just incredible. 🍂🍃👌🇨🇦🍁❤️

It was one of those nights when you don’t really want to go inside.👌
I was outside last fall, looking across the North Channel as the northern lights began to appear. At first they seemed to rise right out of the water and horizon, then reach higher and higher into the night sky. It was one of those rare moments that made us stop talking and just watch.

I spent much of the winter trying to paint that feeling in different ways and I was especially happy with this one. The velvety dark sky and those dramatic streaks of light feel to me like a pretty good memory of that night.

This original 7 x 10” monochromatic watercolour is looking for its forever home. Send me a DM for details. 🖤✨
