In Tibetan, when something is given without expecting anything in return, we call it སྦྱིན་པ་ (generosity). The focus is not on something being “free,” but on the relationship created through giving. What matters is that we care for one another because our lives are connected. As Tibetans in exile from our homelands, we carry forward this tradition of generosity to grow solidarity with our marginalized neighbors.
For the past few years, we’ve been gathering to make sandwiches, pack water and drinks, and share them with immigrant neighbors and day laborers around Jackson Heights, Queens.
Our recent distributions were held in memory of Pawo Loga Rangzen, a Tibetan refugee and immigrant who made Queens his home. We wanted to honor his life by continuing the kind of care he extended to others.
As we organize more distributions, we’d love to have more Tibetans join us. Help make sandwiches, pack food and drinks, distribute them, or donate for supplies. If you’re a Tibetan in the NYC area and want to be part of future distributions, sign up through the link in our bio.
And one small thing we’re especially excited about: we finally have a little wagon. It may not seem like much, but after years of carrying bags by hand, it already feels like another member of our Kyiduk. Every sandwich, every bottle of water and juice gets a little easier to bring to our neighbors. We’re looking forward to many more miles with it. 🌾
