Here at ToonZA we are firm believers in the powers of visual narrative to engage people in history, science and all fields of learning, so it was great to come across this article in Education Week this morning! Have you ever had a teacher who used comics in the classroom? How much do you think it would have changed school for you?

A social studies teacher uses comics to make history feel relevant to his high school students.

The ToonZA hosted event on Tuesday night at the Commons was a great success! wThanks to all who attended. This was also the first night of Africa Month, celebrated at The Commons every year with events from poetry readings to jazz nights. So it was a huge privilege to be able to listen to Zapiro and TAYO, both giants in the African cartooning world.

The two were introduced by Tyler Pike, our fellow ToonZanian; Tyler not only does cartoons and caricatures, he is also mastering the art of being a Host.

TAYO opened with a warm talk and slides of his work. He is the creator of the Our Roots series, which has been going for over 30 years. The series highlights black people and their achievements and history, all packadged in the TAYO style of cartoon-style drawing and writing.

Zapiro - whose cartoons are no doubt embedded in every South African's psyche - regaled us with stories of dodging the cops and being sued by Zuma. It was interesting to hear him talking about deadlines and the mad landscape of South Africa, where everything is kind of surreal sometimes.

After an engaging Q&A sessio, Zapiro and TAYO stayed on to sign books and other merchandise. We were a bit unfortunate with load-shedding, but at least we still had the slideshows. And signing books by the light of cell phones is kind of groovy, expecially when there is amazing music playing in the background.

It was ALL groovy, and we send TAYO and Zapiro our best wishes. We are looking forward to similar events in the future - check out our website https://ndmazin.co.za/ to sign up to our newsletter and find out more about what we do.

On Tuesday the 2nd of May, Zapiro and TAYO Fatunla will be in conversation at The Commons in Muizenberg.

Zapiro, who needs no introduction as his cartoons have been swirling around the planet for decades, will be in conversation with TAYO Fatunla, who is also a multiple award-winning cartoonist and illustrator.

TAYO graduated from the Kubert School in New Jersey, US. He is most renowned for his OUR ROOTS series – Famous people in Black History. OUR ROOTS has been a Black history cartoon column for 30 years, first published in the UK’s Voice newspaper. His idea was to focus on ALL Black peoples in the diaspora, things, places and events. His series has been syndicated in US newspapers including The News Sentinel, and featured in The New York Amsterdam News, Chicago Defender, Sacramento Observer and the Atlanta Voice. He participated at UNESCO’s Cartooning in Africa forum held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and the Cartooning Global Forum in Paris, France.

Zapiro is known for his visual commentary that has at times been exceedingly controversial. He studied media arts at the School of Visual Arts in New York. He has worked as an editorial cartoonist for a number of newspapers including South, Mail & Guardian, The Sunday Times, and The Times. His work has appeared at numerous group shows and exhibitions on New York, Dhaka, Amsterdam, Sweden, and more. His caricatures also appeared on the satirical show ZANEWS. In 2019 he was awarded the Chevalier des Artes et des Lettres. He was also ranked by Jeune Afrique magazine as one of the 50 most influential personalities on the African continent.

The Event starts at 7pm, the eminent cartoonists being introduced by Tyler Pike, a fledgling cartoonist and caricaturist from TOONZA.

Come along and listen to insights and observations from these amazing cartoonists. The Commons is the venue, which provides alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, great food and the most relaxed ambiance you will find in Cape Town. Oh, and the venue is also in Surfers’ Corner, Beach Road, Muizenberg, and has the most delightful balcony with views across the bay. And the most awesome music to tickle your eardrums.

"Speaking to the Guardian in 2016 at the age of 95, Jaffee said he believed satire was becoming harder in the face of politicians who felt no shame about lying. 'I think they’re defeating Mad, because they’re going beyond anything we can think of doing to show the clownish nature of their claims,' he said."

The artist behind the magazine’s famous “fold-in” drawing, Jaffee was Mad’s longest-tenured contributor and only retired when he was 99
