Gods and goddesses, the eternal feminine, galloping horses, matinee idols -- these were less the subjects of Maqbool Fida Husain's canvases than fragments of a civilisation perpetually adjudicating between memory and modernity.

So, to call him merely a painter, then, is to mispresent the persona. He was a barefoot cultural nomad who turned visual imagination into a private, unmistakable dialect, and in doing so held up a mirror to the shifting society.

Anatomy of Belonging

An evening of presentation and conversation with Sarker Protick, International Programme Director at Pathshala, in conversation with Jaheen Faruque Amin.

The conversation will explore ideas around belonging, artistic practice, place, memory, and identity, as part of HFF Lens: Project Development and Artistic Research.

What does a city remember? What lingers in its light, its ruins, its restless verticality, faded horizon, its silences? In this artist presentation and conversation, Sarker Protick turns his gaze toward the city as a shifting landscape of memory, absence, desire, and transformation. His image-making practices inhabit the spaces between the visible and the elusive, where urbanity dissolves into atmosphere, and the familiar becomes strangely distant.

Following his presentation, writer-filmmaker Jaheen Faruque Amin will join Protick in a conversation on the poetics, polemics, and politics of urbanism: on cities that expand, disappear, fracture, and dream, and on the ways contemporary art might arrest these fleeting urban experiences.

১৯৭১ এর ১৩ মে পাকিস্তানী হানাদার বাহিনী কবি রমা চৌধুরীর বাড়িতে আক্রমণ করে, চালায় নির্যাতন। ধর্ষণের শিকার হন তিনি।
নিজের সেই ভয়ংকর ঘটনাকে আড়াল করে তিনি তিন শিশু সন্তান ও মাকে নিয়ে পথে পথে ঘুরেছেন, জঙ্গলে রাত্রি কাটিয়েছেন। সেসময় তিনি পাননি কোনো আশ্রয়, কোনো সহযোগিতা ও ভালোবাসা। যুদ্ধ থেমে গেলেও গেলে রমা চৌধুরীর জীবনের যুদ্ধ থামেনি। বরং তা বেড়েছে শতগুণ। এই সমাজ তাকে সহজভাবে গ্রহণ করেনি। চরম নিগ্রহ ও দারিদ্র্য তাঁকে এবং তাঁর পরিবারকে তছনছ করে দেয়। সাগর, টগর, টুনু পরপর তিন সন্তানকে হারিয়ে তিনি পাথর হয়ে পড়েন।
কিন্তু জীবনতো থেমে থাকেনা। বেঁচে থাকার জন্য শুরু করেন লেখালেখি। ‘একাত্তরের জননী’সহ ১৮টি বই লিখেছেন তিনি। বই লিখেছেন শুধু নয়, জীবিকার প্রয়োজনে এই বই ফেরি করে বেড়িয়েছেন পথে হেঁটে হেঁটে। ২০১৭ সাল সাল পর্যন্ত শারীরিক কষ্ট ও রোগব্যাধিকে অগ্রাহ্য করে তিনি বই ফেরি করে সংসার চালিয়েছেন।
চট্টগ্রামের রাস্তায় রাস্তায় রোদে পুড়ে কিংবা বৃষ্টিত ভিজে খালি পায়ে অনেকেই হয়তো এই বৃদ্ধাকে বই বিক্রি করতে দেখেছেন।
