The People's Studio at Artem invites you to the screening of Where the Clouds End, a documentary by Wanphrang Diengdoh at 4:30 pm.
Synopsis of the film: "My late paternal grandfather was a Bengali who came to Shillong in the early 1900s - long before the present political border divided the lands." After the creation of the border in 1947, the movement of foreigners into Shillong gradually began to arouse unrest. People who had freely previously moved into the Khasi Hills became an unwelcome influx, threatening the land and the purity of the Khasis. "Where the Clouds End" documents the Khasis struggle to claim an authentic ethnicity, pure racial identity and subsequent right to claim land. It challenges stereotypical notions portrayed by the media of the unwanted 'outsider' who threatens traditions, social structures and moral values. Within the framework of three chapters, whose titles are the pillars of the Khasi traditional faith, 'Where the Clouds End' explores identity as a fluid concept, which defies man-made imaginations, historical ideals, political definitions and geographic boundaries.

"We had come to film a documentary on the legendary octogenarian Maharajkumari Binodini Devi, the last of the Manipuri royal princesses and a woman who had carved for herself, not just a name in the literary and artistic world, but was also known for her candid and forthright views on the social and political fabric of the state she lived in and loved," writes Priyanjana Dutta, freelance journalist and independent filmmaker about the Manipuri writer-activist-princess, in last year's Sep-Oct issue.
