Disobedience Archive (Canopy for Broken Time)
In Dialogue with Raqs Media Collective
07.02. to 25.05. 2026

The Disobedience Archive is a constantly growing video archive with no fixed location initiated by Marco Scotini in 2005. Comprising more than one hundred documentary and art films at the intersection of art and activism, all show forms of resistance, social struggle and collective self-organisation. Events, voices and gestures realign in new formations, opening up a wide range of viewpoints and interpretations, rather than insisting on one truth only.

Titled Disobedience Archive (Canopy for Broken Time), this is the most comprehensive presentation to date on view, with fifty film documents in all. The selection of works is a response to the fragility of our time: ecological crises, political polarisation, technological acceleration and ongoing global conflicts.

Raqs Media Collective was invited to engage with the premise of the Disobedience Archive. The Collective, for whom time is a central axis in their practice, asks in turn: How can time be experienced beyond the rigid structures of our present moment?

The exhibition encounters our fractured present with open spatial structures. The starting point for this is the shamiana, a temporary canopy that is easy to erect, and that plays an important role in the everyday life of South Asia. Food is eaten, celebrations are held and mourning takes place under a shamiana – and protesters gather here, too. The simple canopy turns into a symbol of togetherness. For, in the words of Raqs Media Collective, to be together under the shamiana means to share time, to become community, to measure the world not in hours, but in gestures of attentiveness towards others.

As a Kurd in an Arab school, Hiwa K understood not a word of the Arabic spoken around him and in fact did not grasp that what he was not understanding was a foreign language he could learn (ball ballat means blah blah). Until one day, when he was six, he suddenly got it, and from then on he spoke Arabic.

A bit of background: the Kurdish language has been repressed or marginalized for decades in a variety of ways in the areas in which it is spoken, and some Kurdish children never learn their native tongue. To complicate matters, there is no unified Kurdish language, only widely different dialects, making it difficult to articulate the idea of a united Kurdish nation.

The formal design of the collages revisits Hiwa K’s My Father’s Color Periods (2014–), again with an autobiographical reference: when the first color film was broadcast on Iraqi television in 1979, few residents of the Kurdish areas had color TV sets. Hiwa K’s father, a calligrapher, devised a creative solution to the problem. He cut pieces of colored transparent foil and taped them over the black-and-white TV image, transforming the unfulfilled promise of technological progress into an art in its own right.

Hiwa K was born in Kurdistan-Northern Iraq in 1975. His informal studies in his home town Sulaymaniyah were focused on European literature and philosophy, learnt from available books translated into Arabic. After moving to Europe in 2002, Hiwa K studied music as a pupil of the Flamenco master Paco Peña in Rotterdam, and subsequently settled in Germany. His works escape normative aesthetics but give a possibility of another vibration to vernacular forms, oral histories (Chicago boys, 2010), modes of encounter (Cooking with Mama, 2006) and political situations (This lemon tastes of apple, 2011). The repository of his references consists of stories told by family members and friends, found situations as well as everyday forms that are the products of pragmatics and necessity. He continuously critiques the art education system and the professionalization of art practice, as well as the myth of the individual artist. Many of his works have a strong collective and participatory dimension, and express the concept of obtaining knowledge from everyday experience rather than doctrine. Hiwa K participated in major institutional exhibitions, such as Manifesta 7, Trient (2008), La Triennale, Intense Proximity, Paris (2012), the “Edgware Road Project” at the Serpentine Gallery, London (2012), the Venice Biennale (2015) and documenta14, Kassel/Athens (2017), New Museum, NYC (2018), S.M.A.K., Ghent (2018), Kunstverein Hannover (2018), "Theater of Operations" at MoMA (2019), Jameel Arts Center Dubai (2020), Museum Abteiberg (2021), The Power Plant Toronto (2022), KOW, Berlin (2023),“Echoes of the Brother Countries" at HKW, Berlin (2024), “Politics of Love" at Kunsthaus Hamburg (2024), "Dis-placed“ at Konschthal Esch (2024), and Ruya Foundation, Iraq (2024)

We are delighted to invite you to the world premiere of our film "Songs of hope and despair", presented in the official selection of the International Film Festival Rotterdam, Harbor Program.

We would be very happy to see some of you there.

Songs of Hope and Despair (2026) a new film by Chto Delat International directed by Tsaplya Olga Egorova is an improvised fairy tale and highly experimental road movie in which a group of strangely costumed, non-professional actors — exiles from Russia and their friends—set out on an absurd quest for a miracle. Inspired by two key historical works, Werner Tübke’s Panorama of the Peasants’ War and Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s The Niklashausen Journey, the film unfolds in the former mining town of Hettstedt as an unabashedly lo-fi magical game and tragicomic musical. Guided and manipulated by a trickster-magician, and accompanied by the haunting chorus Dark Clouds of Apocalypses, its Fish, Dead drummers, Muse-Leaving-Germany, Dice Roll and other minor rebel agencies wander across landscapes scarred by ecological ruin, failed revolutions, and the unease of the present..

Oscillating between enchantment and exposure, mourning and play, the film asks a deceptively simple question: what does a miracle even look like in politically dire times like these? Drawing past and present into a single ritual procession, Songs of Hope and Despair reflects on manipulation and resistance, despair and stubborn hope, insisting—like all true fairy tales—on the fragile persistence of solidarity even when history seems trapped in cycles of defeat.
