I’ve been working for the past few months on two new book arts pieces for this show. The pieces explore the relationship between book and printmaking and the idea behind what is considered a book. Had a great class with the Young family. Hugo is 8 years old and has a great passion towards making books. He started making books by himself a few months ago. His dad got in contact with me so that he can learn more about bookbinding. I was told after our class he went home to work on another book! Such passion at a young age, I’m very honoured to be able to help him on his bookbinding journey.

A springback binding replica that I have been working on lately. I was working on this replica through photos as the original book is in the UK. It was a challenging project as the book is quite large and very thick. The signatures were sewn three-on to accommodate for the swell. The pages that were printed had to be printed on single sheets and guarded one by one to create signatures. This is the largest springback binding I have made!

My client commissioned this rebinding for her father. It’s a book that they co-wrote, it was published as a paperback and she wanted to rebind it with leather. We opted for the reconstituted leather because of the price point. The client gave me some photos to include in the book and a pocket was added into the back of the textblock for the insert pamphlet.

My client came to me with three beautifully printed Dante books. He wanted them rebound in black leather with gold titling. It was originally paper bound with slip cases. We chose to keep the original titles (which were printed on wood veneer) and inset them onto the new clamshell boxes.

I was doing gold tooling in my studio over the weekend. It was a very slow process as it’s so much harder to do gold tooling in HK in comparison to when I did it a few weeks ago in London. The temperature and humidity really affects the gold leaf. Does anyone have any tips on gold tooling in hot and humid temperatures? Photo credit:

This is the first time that I have repaired a parchment book. The client wanted new leather covers. There was extensive paper repair required as the paper was deteriorating along the spine of most signatures. The pages turned out to be a trapezoid which made the headcaps quite large. There were a few technical aspects that this book challenged, but was definitely fun to figure out how to solve the problems. Swipe left to see the before pictures.
