On May 22nd, Kino Armata is hosting Caillou, a Brussels-based festival focusing on films about/as strategies for territorial struggle. During this evening, we will screen Sarajevo Film Festival Film (1993), a short film by Johan van den Keuken, and Coconut Head Generation (2023), a documentary by Alain Kassanda, followed by an open discussion. Both documentaries center around film and discussion as spaces of refuge and of critical grappling with the deeply unjust realities that affect the films’ main interlocutors.
Through this collaboration, we invite local, regional, and international collectives, cultural workers, festival programmers, artists, and other community members, to reflect about the historical significance of culture and cultural spaces on the survival of communities during times of political struggle in Kosova and elsewhere. Importantly, this program asks: In post-war and post-independence Kosova, how can we collectively build tools and strategies to renew the political potential of culture and critique? What kinds of censorship and self-censorship constrain our ability to position ourselves politically?
