Many people think Ambrym Volcano is no longer active because the famous glowing lava lakes at Mount Benbow and Mount Marum have disappeared. But

Before December 2018, both craters contained huge lakes of molten lava that glowed brightly at night. During a major eruption in 2018, cracks opened in the volcano and the lava drained deep underground, causing the glowing lakes to disappear.

โข Small eruptions and lava flows can still happen.
โข Thick clouds of steam and volcanic gases will rise from the craters again.
โข Scientists regularly detect volcanic tremors beneath the caldera.
โข Ambrym remains at Alert Level 2 (Major Unrest).
The volcano is not asleepโit is simply storing much of its energy beneath the surface.
