American artist Joan Semmel's oil painting 'Secret Spaces' 1976 reclaims the n**e. It depicts the artist's gaze down at her body, the contours of her form resembling those of a rolling landscape scene. Semmel subverts the stereotype of n**e portraits of women painted by men: 'I wanted to subvert this tradition from within.'
