Traditional Sedge Kim Son Village Ninh Binh

Traditional Sedge Kim Son Village Ninh Binh is famous for the cultivation of sedges, do the sedge has long been. Kim Son sedge is associated with nature because the material to make the products from the sedge is as simple as nature in this land. Up to now, Kim Son handicraft products have been present in more than 20 countries and regions in the world.

Originated from the earliest Kim Son village is a wilderness, but there has been created for a special privilege is a special tree – as sedge. According to people in the area, the Sedge has been in Kim Son for nearly two centuries. Over a hundred years of sea dyke, the Kim Son people have created immense flats to grow seagrass.

Seagrass has a rice-growing cycle. Seagulls harvest in May, seasons in October (lunar calendar). When the parrot blossomed on the mudflats of the sea, the farmer began to cut the sedge of the field. The process of growing seagrass is like rice: plow, scatter, drain, drainage, sedge, weed, mud, fertilizer. The quality of the planting depends on the proper mixing of freshwater and saltwater. The irrigation system for the cultivation of sedge is as important as rice. Freshly harvested shrimps are cut, dried and brought to the market and then weave into flowers and products from the sedge.

Dong Xam silver craft village

Dong Xam village in Thai Binh province is one of 3 places well-known for the silver carving craft, together with Hang Bac Street and Dinh Cong village in Hanoi. Also known as Duong Tham, the 600-year old village is now located in Hong Thai commune, Kien Xuong district.

The silver carving craft in Dong Xam village has existed since the 15th century. Legend has it that in 1428, Nguyen Kim Lau, a man from Chau Bao Lac (modern day Cao Bang province), traveled downstream on the Tra Ly River to earn his living and then went on to transfer his silver carving skills to the local people in Dong Xam.
At first, villagers welded bronze items such as moulded buckets or basins, sharpened knives or scissors, and repaired locks. The locals then progressed into the art of silver and bronze carvings.

The village’s heyday was when Dong Xam artisans brought the craft to the nation as a whole. During the Nguyen dynasty in the 19th and early 20th century, they went to the ancient capital of Hue to carve the imperial palace and to craft jewelry for the royal court. The Đồng Xâm artisans, in conjunction with silversmiths in Chau Khe village in Hai Duong province, and Dinh Cong village in Hanoi were the founders of the famous Hang Bac Silver Street in Hanoi. There are approximately 150 silver carving workshops in Dong Xam village currently, employing 4,000 workers and generating around 4.3 million USD a year.

Chuon Ngo Mother of Pearl Inlay Village

Located in Chuyen My commune, Phu Xuyen district, 40 km from Hanoi, Chuon Ngo village (or another name is Ngo Ha) has gained renown as a famous Mother-of-pearl inlaid village for thousands years. Historically, it is said that the great-grandfather of this career is Mr. Truong Cong Thanh, a military mandarin under Ly period. Designs on mother-of-pearl are lively and special which makes you feel the ideal combination in nature between jungle and sea. Tourists are definitely ridiculous to see perfect pieces of mother of pearl: unbroken, flat, and tightly fitted to the carved wood. From colorful mother of pearl, shell and oyster with wide range of decorative veins, artists of Chuon Ngo village create sophisticated and impressive designs. The process of making mother-of-pearl inlay consists of 6 complicated stages including drawing the design, cutting shell into the shape, wood carving, sticking shell into the carved wood, grinding and polishing, making antique look with black powders.

The hand-made products are the symbol of luxury. Recently, products of Mother of pearl inlay village – Chuon Ngo such as cabinet, bed, chessboard, picture, jewel-box, chopstick box are favorite in both domestic and international markets.

Van Phuc Silk Village

Ha Dong silk village is known as Van Phuc silk village, Van Phuc, Ha Dong, Ha oi. It is far about 10 kilometer from the center of Hanoi. This is the most famous silk village from ancient time; there are many patterns and long-stand of Vietnam. Van Phuc silk is selected under the reign of the Nguyen. Located on the Nhue River, Van Phuc silk village retains many features ancient such as the well, lotus flower, tree… Van Phuc silk village has a reputation with silk weaving tradition. Ha Dong silk as well as traditional crafts of the trade villages in Hanoi, often referred to in ancient poetry. According to legend, about 1.200 years ago, Ms. A La Thi Nuong living in Cao Bang is a famous person with skillful weaving of Van Phuc village. She brought the secrets of Chinese weaving silk to teach people who live in the village. When she passed away, she was respected as tutelary deity.

Van Phuc silk village became famous from the reign of Ly. Van Phuc silk was the first introduced at the Marseille International Fair (1931) and Paris (1938), it was evaluated as the sophisticated products of Indochina. Van Phuc silk is very popular in France, Thailand, and Indonesia… From 1958 to 1988, Van Phuc silk was exported to Eastern Europe countries, from 1990, it was exported to many countries in the world.

One Pillar Pagoda – Imperial Citadel of Thang Long

One Pillar Pagoda was built in 1049 in Dien Huu pagoda relics located by One Pillar Pagoda Street, near to Ho Chi Minh President Mausoleum, Ba Dinh District.

Legend has it that King Ly Thai Tong (1028 – 1054) was old but he had no son. One night, the King dreamed about Guan Yin Buddha sitting on a lotus, carrying a boy and giving it to the king. Shortly after, the queen gave birth to a son. The king built a lotus-shaped pagoda and named it Dien Huu Pagoda.

The old pagoda was much larger than it is now; through the dynasties, One Pillar Pagoda was rebuilt several times; each restoration, the pagoda and the surrounding landscape was changed.

Duong Lam ancient village

Located in Sơn Tây Town, 40 km to the west of Hanoi, Đường Lâm village is a very popular tourist destination at the weekends. The village attracts visitors because of its ancient houses and the architectural features of a typical old Vietnamese village with banyan trees and a wharf on the river. It takes just over an hour to get to Đường Lâm village. On the road leading up to the village, tourists can feel the peaceful atmosphere. Masks of Vietnamese Opera

It can be said that the mask is the element which makes the soul and the essence of Tuong - A unique art form that is both folk and scholarly. The white color is mainly used for the women (singer), the kind men (accompanist) or people live in the city. The red color represents the role of martial artists ( like Quan Cong, Dong Kim Lan, Ly Phung Dinh, etc). What makes Tuong more special than other types of national theatre play is rhetoric and mask. The colors used for the mask must be bold and the line must be clear to depict the figure's character and increase the expression of artists' face.

Vietnamese masks are highly symbolic. Face color represents the background and/or personality of the character. The white color is used mostly for women, scholars or urban dwellers. Red color is for loyal war heroes. Black faces usually belong to straightforward and hot-tempered martial men. Thick lines are also drawn around the character’s eyes. These are more or less slanting, depending on age, and the color is also related to the character’s background and personality.
