Meet your Guest Host!
Azadi Sage is a behavioral therapist by day and an actress and spoken word poet immediately after.
Since moving from Atlanta, Georgia to her ancestral home of St. Croix in 2023, Azadi has immersed herself in the community and created a meaningful and unique path for herself. Poetry serves as an important emotional outlet for Azadi as she uses it to tease out difficult feelings and encourage others to do the same.
The host and founder of “Verbal Vibez” a monthly open mic series in St. Croix, Azadi curated space for local creatives to find safety in the spoken word just as she has done since a child.

Come celebrate this special night of inter-island collaboration!

Meet your Featured Storyteller & Poet!
TANTRA-ZAWADI – Mother, Poet, Educator, Pan-African Princess – is the author of three books of poetry (“alifepoeminprogress” published by Chuma Spirit Books, “Gathered at Her Sky,” and “Bubbles: One Conscious Breath,” published by Poets Wear Prada). This international performance poet has presented to standing room audiences around the world.

Zawadi has performed original works off-Broadway including the staged reading of “To Face It”; and featured at The Badilisha Poetry X-Change Festival in Cape Town, South Africa, The New York Public Library at Lincoln Center, The New York City Poetry Festival with Poets Wear Prada, The American Museum of Natural History, The Montserrat Poetry Festival, The Daniel Sorano National Theatre and Rythmes et Formes du Monde in Dakar (The Senegal-America Project), Never Again Royal Night in the UK, Black Art In America, The Great Falls International Word Festival, The Austin International Poetry Festival, and Woodstock 50 (The Senegal-America Project).

Zawadi is a Brooklyn Arts Fund Grantee for her one-woman spoken word performance of “Black Power Baby Blues,” and is a grant recipient of the Laundromat Projects’s 2024 Create & Connect Fund for “Preserving Culture Through Storytelling,” in collaboration with award-winning poet Rescue Poetix. A Pushcart Prize nominee for her poem “Girl,” she is a member of the spoken word trio Precious Gift, recipient of the Kings County District Attorney’s Women’s History Month Award; and in 2014, received the honor of Pan African Princess from HRH Princess Dr. Muzvare Betty Makoni and HRH Princess Moradeum Adedoyin-Solarin. She has also garnered residences at Smith College with the Senegal-America Project, and as a participant in E|MERGE Interdisciplinary Collaborative Residency. She has also collaborated with CNN Hero – Dr. Muzvare Betty Makoni’s Girl-Child Network Worldwide.

Zawadi, who performs regularly with The Senegal-America Project, is a poetry/creative writing workshop facilitator, and appears in numerous global music compilations, anthologies and publications including Essence Magazine.

Featured storyteller Ta**ra Zawadi is a Mother, Poet, Educator, Pan-African Princess, and long-time friend of Pass the Word VI, as this will be her third year collaborating with us. Zawadi, who performs regularly with The Senegal-America Project, is a poetry/creative writing workshop facilitator, and appears in numerous global music compilations, anthologies and publications including Essence Magazine. She is the director of two short documentaries, and her poem and video “Scarlet Waters,” was featured on the Product(RED) video wall to raise awareness for HIV/AIDS in Africa. We are honored to welcome her back to the mic.

For this open mic we are also excited to welcome guest host Azadi Sage, founder of Verbal Vibez, a monthly open mic series on St. Croix. Join us for the second session of our Archival Poetics series this Saturday!

Pass the Word VI, in partnership with My Brother's Workshop, invites you to Archival Poetics: Reclaiming History Through Poetry—a free, six-part monthly writing series that explores how personal and historical archives can inspire meaningful poetry and storytelling.

Participants will discover ways to write from family photo albums, historical documents, letters, journals, newspaper archives, oral histories, community records, and personal memorabilia. Together, we'll explore how these pieces of the past can preserve family history, celebrate our community, and deepen our understanding of where we come from.

Inspired by Virgin Islands author Tiphanie Yanique, who introduced Pass the Word VI to archival poetics, this series is open to everyone—whether you're an experienced writer or simply curious about exploring your family's stories. No writing experience or registration is required, and participation is free.

Workshops are held on the second Saturday of every month from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. We hope you'll join us for this unique opportunity to connect with history, creativity, and community.

One of my favorite things about Pass the Word VI is creating spaces where people can simply be.

This Saturday we’re trying something new, and I couldn’t be more excited.

We’ll begin with a peaceful yoga session led by Paradise Divine, then transition into reflective writing inspired by the beach, the movement, and whatever is on your heart.

Whether you’re a writer, a yogi, or just someone who needs a little space to breathe, you’re welcome here.

I hope you’ll join us.

Bring a journal, water, and an open mind.

Last night was one of those nights I’ll never forget, it was magical!

Three years ago, Pass the Word VI was just an idea. Last night, I looked around the room and saw what it has become, a community.

Thank you to every poet, storyteller, musician, artist, and audience member who joined us to celebrate our 3-year anniversary. Thank you for continuing to believe that everyone’s voice matter and that creating space for one another is worth it.

A special thank you to Cutlass & Cane for opening your doors and helping us create such a welcoming home for the evening.

And to Augustin Kelvin Holder, thank you for sharing your extraordinary gift with us! Watching your live painting unfold alongside the words spoken throughout the night was nothing short of magical. It reminded all of us that art has the power to connect us in ways words alone sometimes cannot.

The evening ended with something I never could have expected. The audience came together, purchased the painting Augustin created, and gifted it to me.

I don’t even know how to put into words what that meant. I’ll treasure it not just because it’s a beautiful painting, but because it represents this community, this milestone, and every person who has helped shape Pass the Word VI over the past three years.

Thank you for believing in this vision. Thank you for showing up. Thank you for making this community what it is.
