Today The New York Times announced the sale of Property from the Estate of Giancarlo Baroni, renowned Old Master connoisseur, collector and dealer, which will include a series of auctions to be held early next year in New York beginning with a dedicated evening and day sale on 29 and 30 January, respectively. Highlights of the prominent collection range from 15th century gold ground paintings to works by artists including El Greco, Gian Paolo Panini , Giambattista Tiepolo, Bernardo Bellotto, Edgar Degas, Eva Gonzalès and Giovanni Boldini, among others. The series of auctions will comprise Old Master paintings and drawings, Impressionist & Modern art, antique frames and decorative arts. Select works will be exhibited in London from 1 – 6 December 2012 and in Paris from 10 – 12 December 2012, and the entire offering will be on view in New York beginning 25 January 2013. http://nyti.ms/Skl9Rm

Our sale of Important 20th Century Design, held in New York on 15 December 2012, will offer a curated selection of European and American decorative arts and design from the last 100 years. The 160 lot sale includes a strong selection of French Art Deco masterworks, highlighted by a Highly Important and Unique “Roses” Vase (est. $600/800,000) by René Lalique circa 1913. Also up for auction is a unique variant of Demeter Chiparus’ five-figure Les Girls sculpture (est. $300/500,000, above left) which is the only example presently known in this smaller jewel-like scale and turquoise patina color. Other highlights include Moutons de Laine (est. $300/500,000) by François-Xavier Lalanne, Quarter Lounge (est. $60/80,000) by Johnny Swing and an Armchair from the Men’s Smoking Room, Radio City Music Hall (est. $40/60,000) by Donald Deskey. The sale will be on view in our York Avenue headquarters beginning on 8 December.

Our Evening Sale of Old Master and British Paintings Including Three Renaissance Masterworks from Chatsworth realized a total of £58 million / $93.5 million / €71.5 million tonight in London and achieved a total of eight record prices. The top lot was Raphael’s Head of a Young Apostle (c. 1519-20) which sold for £29.7 million / $47.8 million / €36.6 million after a 17 minute bidding battle, becoming the second highest price for any Old Master work of art.

Sotheby’s bi-annual 19th Century European Art auction in New York will be held on 8 November 2012, featuring 105 exceptional works of art, including masterpieces by William Bouguereau, Giovanni Boldini, Jules Breton and others which have not been available on the market in more than 50 years. The sale offers an exceptional group of paintings by William Bouguereau reflecting every period of his career, with works spanning from 1869 to 1901, all fresh to the market and having been in Private Collections for decades. Highlights include Prêtresse de Bacchus (est. $700/1 million), Jeunes filles de fouesnant revenant du marché (est. $500/700,000) and La branche de Cerisier (The Cherry Branch) (est. $1.5/2 million), among others.

A large-scale masterpiece by Mark Rothko will lead Sotheby's Evening Auction of Contemporary Art on 13 November.

Our Contemporary Art Day Auction on 14 November in New York will include a special series of works sold to benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation. The works are donated directly by artists George Condo, Cindy Sherman, Donald Baechler, Ross Bleckner, Dan Colen, Marlene Dumas, Elizabeth Peyton and Kehinde Wiley and will support grant-making initiatives in the Foundation’s 20th year.
