My name is Julia Allmond, a retired British midwife, and US labor and delivery, antenatal and postpartum RN. I am a Mum of 5 and Nanna of 11. I live in the middle of nowhere in the Mohave desert, Arizona, USA and I have watched in horror the unfolding devastation in Ukraine and felt the need to do something. So I started knitting beanie hats in the Ukrainian flag colours to show the Ukrainian men, women and children that they are being thought about all over the world, even in the desert in the middle of nowhere.
I am asking knitters of the world to come together and to get knitting beanie hats, with love knitted into every stitch, and then for those beanie hats to be sent to Ukraine. I am working on collection points and shipping methods to get them there, hoping that there will be collection points all around the world, then for organizations to ship them to Ukraine. That is a work in progress, so any suggestions are very welcome. That is not my forte, my career was delivering babies and one of my hobbies is knitting.
As of today, March 16th, 2022 there have been approximately 3 million Ukrainian citizens that have fled, most of them with just the clothes on their backs. They are so patriotic and didn’t want to leave their country, so I am hoping this small gesture of kindness and warmth will show them that the whole world is thinking about them. Even though 3 million have fled their war torn country 41 million remain in Ukraine in bitterly cold weather, so maybe a beanie hat in their Ukrainian flag colours will not only keep them warm, but show them that they are being thought of…..one head at a time.
Come on knitters of the world, let’s get those knitting needles clicking. And if you can’t knit then buy some blue and yellow wool for someone who can and ask them to do it.
Let’s do this! ❤️
