Jen Sygit joined John Bommarito on Acoustic Alternatives, recorded right here at Grove Studios, and the conversation went somewhere we didn't expect but really needed.
It started with comparison. Jen said she's mostly happy with where she's at — as long as she's not measuring herself against everybody else. So she's doing that less. And when she stopped looking sideways, she could finally see forward: real progress, financially and work-wise.
Then came the part that got us. She's whittled her gig list down to only the things she actually enjoys. She doesn't do the ones she doesn't. And she's comfortable saying no to things she never used to turn down.
We think about this a lot around here. So much of the creative life is a yes-machine — yes to the gig, yes to the favor, yes to the thing that pays $40 and costs you a Saturday. Learning when to say no isn't quitting. It's steering.
Jen's been at this a long time and she's still figuring out how to do it in a way that keeps her happy. That's the honest version of a music career, and we're grateful she shared it.

David Wilcox joined John Bommarito on Acoustic Alternatives, and the story he told about finding his voice is one we keep coming back to.
For a long stretch of his career, he couldn't sing well. Not for lack of talent — his voice was buried in his own insecurity. He was doing an affectation, chasing what he thought a "real musician" was supposed to sound like on a record. Which meant he couldn't sound like himself.
Then came a chance encounter out in nature that tricked him into singing without the performance layered on top. The woman listening said, "Well, that must be you."
And that was it. That was the door opening.
We see a version of this in our rooms all the time. Somebody books a session, spends the first hour trying to sound like the reference track in their head, and then somewhere around hour two they stop trying and the real take shows up. Every time.
Whether you're tracking your first demo or your fifth album — the version of you that isn't performing is usually the one worth keeping.

David Wilcox stopped by for Acoustic Alternatives with John Bommarito, recorded right here at Grove Studios in Ypsi.
He played a song called "The Beautiful," and before he started, he explained where it came from: the idea that you have to tend to your emotional buoyancy so you don't sink in the sea of sorrow. He wrote it standing in a museum, looking at paintings, having just read about another shooting. He wanted to work for justice and peace — and he also needed, right then, somewhere quiet to be.
The line that stuck with us is his image of an umbrella. It'll keep the rain off you. It won't do a thing about the sky.
That's honest in a way a lot of songs aren't. Beauty isn't a solution. It's a shelter, and shelter is how people make it long enough to do the harder work.
Big thanks to David for bringing this one into our room, and to John for the conversation around it.

How are ya?! 🎶 Grove was buzzing with something special when the Keynote Sisters stopped by for Live on Acoustic with John Bommarito. They brought a song that gets right into the messy, quiet aftermath of a breakup — the blame that gets passed around, the things you hear through the grapevine, the silence that says more than words ever could.
This is exactly the kind of moment we built Grove for — a space where artists can just show up and be real, no pressure, no polish required. The Keynote Sisters brought both, and John's conversation with them added even more depth to the story behind the song.
Catch the full performance and interview now, and keep tuning in daily at 3PM for Acoustic Coffee Break on Sonic Coast Radio for more sessions like this one.
