The Youngstown Saxon Culture Group traveled back to Bucharest for the return trip home. We had a very nice group meal, complete with traditional entertainment. The end of a magnificent journey.

After Brasov, our Culture Group departed for Bran, to tour Bran Castle. The village is steeped in Vlad Dracula lore, but this castle was not his home. That one is down the road a bit, and not really accessible.

After our time in Bistrita, we depart for a tour of a UNESCO Fortified Church in Prejmer (Tartlau). These fortifications were built to protect entire communities during invasions. The UNESCO sites have been restored, and are open for viewing. Magnificent structures, with the beautiful church in the center, surrounded by housing units for the entire population of the village. After the fortification tour we embark to Brasov (Kronstadt), another of the 7 Siebenbürgen cities. Pictured is the city center, along with the the "Black Church", named after the appearance, after a city wide fire that destroyed most of the area.

We continued our journey to ancestral homes of group members. This third stop of the day took us to Barbara Schneider's village. Some group members traveled on the bus to these villages, while others discovered Bistrita and the surrounding area, enjoying free time. After the day of touring Saxon villages, some assembled on the hotel patio for refreshments. The next day took us all to Christine Roppelt's mother's village, complete with a church tour and an impromptu organ demonstration. This beautiful house of worship is still used as a Lutheran Church, and displays historical items, along with traditional Saxon attire.

After Zuckmantel, we depart for a two night stay in Bistrita. This allows time for many members of our group to visit ancestral villages. Pictured is an evening walk in the Old section of Bistrita, along with images from Petersdorf and Waltersdorf. The churches, once Lutheran Evangelical, are now mostly Orthodox. Our guide Alex managed to find local people to help our group locate churches, cemeteries and in some cases homes. A local gentleman took us through the overgrown cemetery in Walter's village, and graciously invited the entire group into his patio and home! In Waltersdorf, Pete's birthplace, and the ancestral home of Bob, Mike, Mimi and Kati, we met the mayor and viewed homes, schools and the church.
