Stage Review: ‘Lady Day’ Brings Billie Holiday’s Story to Life
"Carla D. Gipson takes on the role of Holiday in this production and serves as the director of the show. One of the most important things about her performance is that Gipson does not try to impersonate Holiday. Trying to impersonate such an idolized figure can get you into some deep water, unless you are very adept at such things. Rather, Gipson approaches the role from a style standpoint." – J.E. Carla D. Gipson is quite at home in the role of Billie Holiday and punches all the right buttons in the Hopewell Theatre production.

The Hopewell Theatre presents “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill,” a production centered on one of Billie Holiday’s final performances. Set in a Philadelphia bar in 1959, the show combines more than a dozen musical numbers with stories and reminiscences about the legendary singer.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 11, 18 and 19, and 2 p.m. Sept. 13 and 20.

Elvis Costello has been weighing the impact and legacy of his early-career music.
The Rock Hall of Famer mounted a summer tour with his band, The Imposters, plus guitarist Charlie Sexton, in a specialized show titled “Radio Soul! The Early Songs of Elvis Costello.”
The tour will come to Packard Music Hall on Sept. 15.
