Our First Friday Open Mic kicks off September 4th, 5-8pm in the courtyard. Bring a poem, a short story, or your favorite song and share it with us (or just come to listen and soak it all in).

On This Day, August 28: The March on Washington

On August 28, 1963, an estimated 250,000 people gathered on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. It remains one of the largest political rallies for civil rights in American history.

The march called for an end to segregation, fair wages, and equal protection under the law. It was there, from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his most famous speech.

Less than a year later, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

"C.A. was a focal point for keeping the family together. It kept the kids off the streets and allowed parents to send their children to a place they felt was positive and safe."

That's William Lee Smallwood, historian and former York City Council member, talking about Crispus Attucks. He said that even in his later years, C.A. still felt like his home away from home.

🏆 Big news! The Crispus Attucks History & Culture Center has won the 2026 Downtown First Cultural Catalyst award, presented Thursday, August 13th at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, where we stood out among three finalists.

Along with the award, we received a State House certificate and a State Senate proclamation, all of which will soon be on display at the HCC.
