Did you ever want to learn about one of the two visionaries behind Surf Point? Join us this Saturday June 7 at 2pm for “Beverly Hallam: Artist as Innovator,” at the York Public Library , a talk by Carl Little. *Please arrive before 2pm to view the exhibition on the second floor.*

In his illustrated talk, art critic and author Carl Little will revisit Hallam’s life and art (1923-2013), highlighting this fearless innovator who explored cutting-edge techniques ahead of her time - from acrylic to computer graphics. Carl spent many hours with Hallam preparing his book: Beverly Hallam: An Odyssey in Art (1998). In addition to her wide range of artistic interests, Hallam also built a legacy as an advocate for artists, in part by being a founder of the Barn Gallery in Ogunquit and conceiving of Surf Point as a residency for artists.

Little’s book will be available for sale and signing after his presentation.

Space is limited - more info and registration via the link in our bio.

This event is part of a Surf Point partnership with the York Public Library exploring the exhibition Beverly Hallam: Chasing Light open from May 13 through August 27, 2025.

We are pleased to announce a pilot residency in partnership with the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) taking place July 28 – August 4. The program brings together NADA gallerists Lauren Marinaro of Marinaro (New York, NY), Alex Nazari of Gattopardo (Los Angeles, CA), and Nicoletta Pollara of Night Gallery (Los Angeles, CA) for a week-long residency at Surf Point. During their time on site, the gallerists will connect with Maine and New Hampshire artists through studio visits, conversations, and shared meals.

On Monday, May 19th at 12pm, we will open an application portal via our website for eligible artists to submit their portfolios for review by the visiting gallerists. Our aim is to bring greater visibility to the region’s artists, promote collaborative cultural exchange, and support the larger arts ecosystems that artists and gallerists operate within. After we receive 150 applications, the submissions will close. All submissions will be reviewed by the visiting gallerists, and a total of 9 applicants will be selected to receive studio visits from the visiting gallerists.

This call is open to working artists age 21+ who reside in Maine or New Hampshire and are not currently enrolled in an undergraduate program.

On August 2, 2025, Surf Point will host a public Community Day at Surf Point, during which all are invited to tour the residency, meet the gallerists, and partake in scheduled activities and food offerings.

We are six days away from the opening of Beverly Hallam: Chasing Light at the York Public Library , curated by UMass Fine Arts Center Visual Arts Director Kristina Durocher! Please join us on Tuesday, May 13th from 5-7pm to view the exhibition of Surf Point’s founder and first Artist-in-Residence. There will be remarks from Kristina, Surf Point, the York Public Library, as well as some light bites and live music.

Beverly Hallam: Chasing Light celebrates the visionary work of Beverly Hallam (1923–2013), a vital member of Ogunquit’s art community and a pioneering contemporary realist. Known for her innovative mastery across media, Hallam seamlessly integrated photography into her paintings and prints, shaping luminous compositions. From coastal scenes to floral still lifes to digital abstractions, this exhibition explores Hallam’s lifelong use of photography in her pursuit to capture and express the elusive nature of light.

Accompanying the exhibition is a full length essay on Hallam’s practice by Kristina Durocher; a chronology of Hallam’s life by Olga Herrera; an online catalogue of her work held at Surf Point; and two Hallam limited editions for sale in support of Surf Point’s programs.

The exhibition will be on view through August 27, and will be accompanied by additional public programming. Please visit our website via link in bio for more info and to register.
