"When you achieve something, you also lose something. I do miss my family. I do call them most often. But I miss them as a, you know, I miss that tight hug. The presence of, like, how, you know. Yeah. I miss them a lot."

Kamal Singh, on the cost of being a working artist far from home.

His mother says it differently: "He is the most beloved, that's why he is so far away from me."

Backstage, before the curtain, Kamal Singh is alone with his thoughts.

Years before, in Russia, mid-jump, his patka came off. The other dancers laughed. Later, in professional auditions, he learned his appearance was costing him work. Cutting his Kesh was one of the hardest decisions of his life. His parents agreed, believing he'd come back to his faith.

He still recites Japji Sahib and Rehras Sahib every day. He calls himself a seeker.

"There is no more Kamal. I became the character. I became an artist."

That's how Kamal Singh describes the moment he steps onstage in costume. There's no Kamal. Only the work.

His mother says it differently. "Society claims a woman is known either by her husband's name or her parents' name. But my son has made me known to the world."

"Five years, six years before, there was a different Kamal. You cannot talk to him. He will not be around. He will be in the corner, quiet and very shy."

Kamal Singh, on himself before ballet.

He used to participate in kirtan. He learned Gatka for five years. Then he found ballet at 17. "It was a breath of fresh air. Like new living. New life. This is different Kamal."

"Before, I wasn't used to cook. My mother was there, my family was there. Lunch, dinner, everything was ready for me. But here, when you come alone, you learn breakfast. You have to maintain yourself, ironing, traveling. Before, I also didn't know how to book a flight."

Kamal Singh, on what it took to leave home for a ballet career.

"You learn a lot from life. You make mistakes. You learn also."

A few things you may not know about Kamal Singh.

His mother calls him "Noni" out of love. His family didn't have a TV growing up; he promised his mother he'd buy her one. He practiced Gatka for five years before discovering ballet. He calls himself "Shah Rukh Khan in ballet." His parents pulled together savings to send him abroad and his visa arrived just in time. He goes to Gurdwara Sahib in Southall whenever he's in London. His teachers describe his energy onstage as ethereal and giving.

"I do miss my aloo paratha in the breakfast, and Indian chai sometimes. But in London, I used to go Gurdwara Sahib in South Hall, so there I used to have my Indian meals and parathas in the morning and chai. Just giving a time that I just meditate there, pray there. Nice feeling."

Kamal Singh, on missing home.

Some days, he says, you cannot tell anyone. You miss your family. You cry. You can't explain it.

"My soul was jumping. My soul was so happy. My soul was so joyous. Then I felt like this is what I was looking for."

Kamal Singh, on the moment he discovered ballet at 17.

Five or six years before, you couldn't talk to him. He'd be in the corner. Quiet. Shy. Then he found the thing that made his soul jump.

"Starting late was a little difficult for me, because I have to use those muscles which I haven't used before, like turnouts and square positions."

Kamal Singh's body wasn't built for ballet. He was 17 and physically more like a Bollywood dancer than a classical ballet one. He learned. He stretched. He used coconut oil before every class to loosen his tight muscles.

Now he's performing the work most dancers train from age 8 to do.
