So my amazing nephew Dylan has recently been faced with some unexplained symptoms and discomforts that led to a pediatrician visit on Wednesday, June 1st. After a neurological exam by the pediatrician, it was suggested to His parents jon and Elise that they get Dylan to the ER at CHOC at Mission immediately for a CT scan. There, the doctors saw something near the lower right side of Dylan's brain that was concerning and needed further immediate evaluation. This finding prompted an ambulance transport to CHOC at Orange. Once there, Dylan was admitted overnight and on Thursday, underwent anesthesia for an extensive MRI to get a closer look on Friday morning the doctors decided that what they are dealing with is called Chiari Malformation and has ultimately caused a syrinx. A syrinx is a fluid that forms in the spinal cord. In Dylan's case, the syrinx is extremely large and even the biggest this neurology team has ever experienced. The severity of his syrinx is causing his extreme inflammation in his spine which in turn is causing pressure and fluid to build up in his brain. Surgery on Dylan's skull, brain, and spinal cord are necessary at this time to alleviate the pressure and remove the built up fluid that is causing him discomfort. This surgery will take about 3 hours. And will be happing at 5pm today Once the surgery is complete, Dylan will likely spend a few days in the ICU at CHOC at Orange. After that, the plan is that Dylan will return to the neurology floor to undergo physical therapy for about one week, depending on recovery progress. My sister In law elise has been with Dylan from the first moment and has not left his side. Jon is currently juggling Elijah and Eliana, while trying his best to be at the hospital for Elise and Dylan both. This next week is going to be a long road for them all and they could really use our support and prayers and if felt lead below is a meal train link…. Our family feels soo helpless being so far away at this time https://mealtrain.com/o03v1n
