Pey Dalid - פ״ד - Aseret Yemei Teshuva

The King is in His palace
10 Days of returning to Hashem

"The language of the King in the field during Elul, and the King entering His palace during the Yamim Noraim, can be understood as describing not where HaShem is, but how accessible His Presence becomes to us and how our own consciousness is changing.

In Elul, the King is “in the field”—the distance feels diminished. We are invited to approach HaShem exactly where we are, before we have perfected ourselves.

Then Rosh Hashanah begins another movement. We stand before the King with greater awe. During the Aseret Yemei Teshuvah, the imagery of the King being “near” expresses the extraordinary opening for teshuvah: the door is open, and we are being called inward.

So perhaps the question “Where is He?” has a surprising answer: *He has not gone anywhere. We are the ones moving.*

HaShem is always here. What changes is the veil between us and Him—the degree to which our hearts are turned toward Him.

That makes Elul and these Ten Days especially precious. The invitation is not to find HaShem somewhere far away, but to remove what prevents us from recognizing that He was never absent.

May we enter the inner chamber not because HaShem has finally come close, but because we have finally become willing to draw close to Him."
