YAW Artist Highlight: Raisa Nosova ✨

“My work opens a platform for discussion on the topic of trauma and resilience. I seek to bring awareness to the emotional baggage that survivors have to conceal in daily life. I dissect, peel, slice, unveil and reorganize extreme experiences in my studio practice to help me process the impacts.” -Raisa Nosova

“..the second reason Raisa Nosova is indispensable: her unflinching commitment to her concept. At a time when visual artists are, too often, content to be merely decorative, Nosova is motivated, and she wears that motivation proudly. She refuses to hide from any of the unsettling implications of her pieces: all the trauma, bodily harm, vulnerability, emotional peril, and life-giving fluidity of womanhood and motherhood, is right there on the (see-through) surface. Given the alacrity that radiates from her pieces, you can bet that Nosova has thought all of this through. Nothing about her pieces feels accidental. Her work is a very specific response to actual human experiences that many people have had, and it’s a joy to see an artist express herself so clearly and with such confidence.” -Tris McCall for Jersey City Times

Come see Raisa’s work , including her incredible painting “Displacement, Victorian” , 71"x165", Acrylic Paint & Oil Stick on Canvas (slide 2) at during YAW !

YAW Artist Highlight: Lauren Camara ✨

Lauren Camara is a self-taught artist, graphic designer and art director based in the Bronx, New York. She has always been fascinated by the unusual textures, bold colors and intricate patterns that characterize paper. A professional graphic designer and art director for the past 25 years, Lauren first became interested in creating art using paper when she found herself saving the books of paper swatches she received from printing companies. She dreamed of somehow incorporating them into artwork. Eventually, she used those paper samples to create her first cut paper piece.

When working on her art, Lauren integrates her technical skills and artistic sensibility to create distinctive, graphic-driven work. She cuts all of the paper by hand using a X-Acto knife, a skill she learned while mocking up graphic design work.

Lauren is inspired by her family that spans a variety of cultures and religions as well as her community, nature, music and New York City. The textures, patterns and colors of the papers she chooses represent the contrasts, complexities and contradictions of her experiences.

Lauren’s art brings her pure joy. She hopes her work will make someone smile.

“I explore my Staten Island neighborhood: the shapes of shadows from trees, the glow of windows and porch lights, and glimpses of private interiors with acrylic, oil paint, charcoal, and ink. My work is shaped by light and shadow, particularly in the dark of the night, and the interaction of people within their surroundings. I'm fascinated by the mysterious quality of life, the inner world of people, and the enduring presence of nature.”

PRESS RELEASE
Continuing its commitment to bringing the public exemplary art exhibitions featuring both emerging and established artists Warburton Galerie is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Paintings & Works on Paper by artist Stephanie DeManuelle. Opening Reception to be held Saturday, March 18, 6-8 pm.

Stephanie's work is nature inspired and semi-abstract-beginning with a continuous drawing process that accretes layers of paint as the artist follows a visual trail through the motif. Her desire in painting is to get beneath the surface of the outward appearance of things to reveal what is significant, but not readily visible. A root or a shell will offer an opportunity to explore shape, line and movement that echoes emotional states that are otherwise inaccessible. The resulting works are experienced through the voice of the material-the use of thickly textured and viscous earth toned mixtures that suggest anthropomorphic or geographic imagery. What is dominant is movement and turbulence. The relationships in the paintings are a 'stand in' for the invisible forces, sensations and tensions that govern our consciousness.

“I have always admired Stephanie’s approach to her work- she looks beyond what is readily presented as if it’s the most natural thing, quickly but thoughtfully processing what stands before her. She is both decisive and intuitive- capturing various moments that become beautiful abstractions of what is actually there. The work is bold yet sensitive, emotive and full. Your eyes can’t help but follow the gestural markings around the composition, experiencing the action of how each piece was made as you gaze. The capacity an artist has to transform the world around them – literally and metaphorically, is truly apparent throughout this body of work. We are excited to provide the platform for that to be shared with our community here in Yonkers by hosting this show” – Melissa Starke, Curator

Stephanie DeManuelle grew up in south Louisiana and spends summers in the Adirondack mountains of New York state. She feels the influence of both locales in her work.

Stephanie has been an art educator for the past 35 years, teaching at Parsons School of Design and Fashion Institute of Technology. She served as Chair of the Department of Fine Arts at FIT from 2006-2016 after which she retired from teaching.

The exhibition is on view through April 22, 2023.
