NOVENA
Hands prayerfully cupped around candle flames
Within the colonial cathedral’s
Vast bowl of hollowed out darkness…
The scene should finely crosshatch into a drawing.
Instead, the hands, around tea lights, glow
A lambent, burnished orange, like fire,
And the stained-glass windows begin,
In the background, to extend, to grow,
Creating an incredible distance
Of fractals bending stories within homilies…
Long arches stretching away into the darkness,
Glowing with angled shards of glass,
Mutely, from an infinite distance,
Far about the glowing prayer-cupped hands,
Like spear-blade shaped stars.
Every day, for nine days, through cold rain
This season’s evenings
You come to the cathedral,
You pray.
The lips of the mantilla’d, serious ladies
Flatten together like two flat palms,
Straight, dark, reserved and thin.
For the priest, in the sacristy, secretly,
One young widow might almost grin.
Broad, pale, matronly faces
Rule the candle dark,
And are ruined,
Ruined,
Maria, by your beautiful face.
Next to you,
A pleasant old woman
Becomes an ogre in a sensible skirt.
Day in,
Day out,
Presents collect
In the apartments and condos
And large houses
Of the city.
A few porches
Are robbed
Of their Amazon deliveries.
Fake trees
With you, with me,
With our families,
Don their finery
Of built-in, yellow-white lights,
Glittering ornament bulbs,
Here and there,
A small painted rustic wooden toy.
All of it pales in comparison
To evening prayer, the ritual meal
At a different house each night
For nine nights… All
Pales
Compared to those praying hands,
Burnished and orange,
Glowing in the eternally stretching
Darkness
Of
The cathedral.

NOVENA
Rectas, oscuras, reservadas y delgadas.
Arruinados,
María, por tu hermoso rostro.
Junto a ti,
Y grandes casas
De la ciudad.
Algunos porches
Son robados
De sus entregas de Amazon.
Árboles falsos
Contigo, conmigo,
Con nuestras familias,
Se visten de gala
Con luces amarillas-blancas incorporadas,
Bolas de adorno brillantes,
Aquí y allá,
Un pequeño juguete rústico de madera pintada.
Todo palidece en comparación
Con la oración vespertina, la comida ritual
En una casa diferente cada noche
Durante nueve noches... Todo
Palidece
En comparación con esas manos en oración,
Bruñidas y naranjas,
Brillando en la eternamente extendida
Oscuridad
De
La catedral.
