In Crystal River, Florida, warm underground springs hold steady at 72° F year-round. Every winter, hundreds of manatees migrate here from colder waters, gathering in shallow channels where the temperature keeps them alive. These creatures grow to 13 ft and weigh up to 2000 lbs. They have no natural enemies. They drift through their world with the unhurried confidence of animals that have never needed to run. Intrigued, we went to document it. The finished film aired this week on Galileo /ProSieben.

The question we ask about every scene before it makes the cut: does this earn its time?

Not is it good. Not is it interesting. Does it earn its time in this film, at this point in the story?

A scene can be beautifully shot, emotionally resonant, completely true, and still not earn its time. Because documentary isn't a collection of good moments. It's an argument. Every scene has to be making the case.

The edit room is where the film either holds together or it doesn't. Everything before it is raw material. This is where the work becomes a film.
