I wish film understood that their depictions of burned people as being vengeful, maladjusted and murderous contributes to against burned people and people with visible difference. I know Is God Is has important messages about violence against Black women but please don’t use the same tropes of burned people being villainous and vengeful. We can do better! Check out C.A.R.D.D. Just finished speaking at Lazar Middle school for their Living Lessons program, which teaches middle schoolers about difference and the importance of kindness and compassion. I spoke about disfigurement and what it’s like to look different in this world. These kids touched my heart with their openness and kindness. Plus I got to teach them about ! Compassion and kindness are everything and we can all do better.

The Importance of Mindset:
We have one large rhododendron in our yard that blooms every spring. I found myself thinking, “I wish the other rhododendrons we planted hadn’t died or grew better. This is the only big one we have.”
Then I realized my negativity. Yes the other bushes hadn’t done well, but LOOK AT THIS BEAUTIFUL BUSH! Now I smile every day when I see it. Many times we only focus on what we lack and fail to notice the beauty right in front of us. The power of is that it refocuses us on what we have instead of what we lack.

How we are represented on screen has tremendous impact on our self image. Unfortunately does a routinely poor job of representing but we are working to change that. Please check out .pell terrific piece in the We can do so much better for a vulnerable population.
