Black candles are one of the most misunderstood tools in witchcraft.

People assume black means negativity, danger, or destruction.

Traditionally, the function is different.

Black is used for absorption, containment, concealment, endings, and protection.

Where white reflects and amplifies, black draws inward. It marks boundaries. It creates separation. It closes cycles.

That’s why black candles appear in banishing, uncrossing, warding, shadow work, ancestor rites, and threshold practices.

Not to call something in.

To define what stays out.

Black also represents the unseen.

The dark moon.
The fertile soil beneath growth.
The space before transformation begins.

In candle work, black is often chosen when something needs to end cleanly, be reduced, or be held without leaking into everything else.

It is not a colour of fear.

It is a colour of control.

Nothing grows forever.

Nothing remains open forever.
