Congratulations to Jeremy Ripley, Grant Street Studios Program Manager and Spring 2026 Humanities Institute SEED Grant recipient! 🎉

Ripley and his collaborators, Jessica Wicks-Allen and Tra Bouscaren, both assistant professors in the School of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies, are bringing history to life with "Within These Walls: Harriet Jacobs's Quest for Freedom." The mobile immersive installation features a life-size replica of the garret where Harriet Ann Jacobs hid for seven years while escaping slavery, inviting visitors to experience the spatial and emotional reality of her journey to freedom.

Jacobs went on to become an abolitionist and author of "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl," one of the most significant autobiographies in American literature. This project translates that powerful scholarship into an accessible, public learning experience, expanding our understanding of slavery's lived realities and honoring enslaved women's vital role in the fight for American freedom.

The School of Art is so proud to see this work recognized by the ASU Humanities Institute! Learn more at the link in bio. 🔗
