Pay it no mind

This is an Appalachian way to say "Don't worry about that at all."

The phrase comes from older English patterns where “pay” didn’t just mean money, but also meant to give or devote something (like attention, respect, or effort).

The wording shows up in various forms in 18th–19th century English, but it became especially common in Southern American and Appalachian speech, where that older grammatical style stuck around longer.

Standard English today would say “don’t pay it any mind,” but Appalachian and Southern dialects often use double negatives for emphasis, not confusion.

Cut a Shine

In the 18th and 19th centuries "shine" could refer to something flashy or spirited, not just literal light, and "cut" meant to perform or carry out.

When you put the words together, the phrase simply means to put on a lively show and draw attention to yourself, usually by acting playful or dancing.

Example:

"He likes to cut a shine when company comes over."

"You should've seen her cuttin' a shine at the party last night.
