It’s never the funeral.

It’s never the flowers,
the prayers,
or the dirt falling onto a casket.

It’s the silence…

The kind that swallows every breath
and reminds you the world keeps spinning
for everyone except the ones left behind.

It’s watching the people you love
collapse under a pain
you’d carry a thousand times over
if it meant they never had to feel it.

But death doesn’t bargain.

It doesn’t care who begs.
It doesn’t care who screams.

It only takes.

And it leaves the rest of us
standing in the wreckage,
trying to convince ourselves
we’re still whole.

I hate that all I can offer
is my presence.

from the hands of time.
