Alright! Exited to share some stills of my mural at Oklahoma State Fair !!
The past two years that I’ve participated, there wasn’t a theme, but this year they did! The theme was Route 66!
At first I was actually pretty sad- I didn’t know how to connect my art, what I do, with Route 66. My work is about loving things that are unloved, hard to love, or misunderstood. It’s about finding one’s way in this weird crazy world. About grief, and about living with grief; finding life again under the weight of it.
How the heck do connect that with cars and neon lights and roadtrips?? How do I connect with a road? Some asphalt on the ground? But then it dawned on me. 💡
There *is* a way I can connect my beloved unloved creatures with Route 66!
*ROADKILL*
I knew I wanted to paint a vulture!!! I’ve actually been wanting to paint one for a while. About 6 months ago I had a dream, in which a vulture appeared. He seemingly was trying to give me a message I couldn’t understand. In the waking world I think I figured it out, and it was such a wonderful message! I have felt like the vulture has been my guardian angel ever since.
However, if I only painted a vulture, I would leave out my iconic bugs! How can I include them with this theme? How about the beetle I’ve been obsessing over recently?! The American burying beetle! They also eat carrion (they might be pickier than the vulture, but that’s beside the point.) another friend that’s been on my list to paint is the dung beetle. I decided to add him, and broaden the concept to that of the clean up crew of The mother road. And while I’m at it I will add some cool mushrooms to complete the cycle!
So here we have our dirty jobs crew, the underdogs of Route 66!
Since posting the reveal video yesterday, I’ve gotten lots of comments calling them “beautiful” and “pretty” which gives me a little giggle and great pride! It’s not every day you hear folks calling dung beetles and vultures beautiful. I am so happy my art is helping you see them the way I do! Beautiful and important!
If you resonate with this mural you can vote for it on the Oklahoma State Fair page! I’ll have the link in my stories!
