The Jianghu, or ways of lakes and rivers, is the term used to separate the mortal and immortal worlds. A strict caste system that provides protection to mortals. In simple terms, mortals live in one world, and cultivators live in another. The concept of “punching down” or getting in the affairs of your lessers is a function of Jianghu. Combat between cultivators is expected. Not all seek it out but to step on the paths of Heavens opens one up to the possibility of war and death.
Early stage Cultivators, such as Iron and Silver, are given latitude by Death and allowed to find their way on the path. These cultivators are called the Early Realm, or Early foundation. The fights between them are largely separated by rank. A higher rank cultivator may ask for “face”, respect, but should not strike a lesser. This is enforced by the Sects but should not be relied on if the Senior can afford the price of the punishment. A senior from a powerful Sect will break “decorum” and will often receive a slap on the wrist.
Gold and Jade cultivators are considered Mid realm or Mid foundation have tighter constraints and Death holds more sway on them. They do not simply lose some advancement upon death, instead they risk a permanent loss of their soul. This changes their perspective and they tend to hold tighter to Jianghu. Complex politics of guest relations and Sect politics make this portion of Jianghu a dance to navigate.
Saints and Sovereigns, known as Late stage, or Core cultivators, have their eyes upon ascension and going to war in the higher and lower planes. They often do not participate in the political dance of the Mid-Ranked world. They seek to solidify their Dao and step away from mortal concerns.
