Group chats persist far after a residency period ends, potlucks warm the soul (and stomach), spontaneous workshops introduce new crafts and materials, and artists often form long lasting connections with each other. Individual cottage residencies offer artists live/work space within the larger creative community of the Byrdcliffe Summer Program. Community and connection are core principals of a Byrdcliffe summer and artists from all backgrounds and all stages of their career are invited to apply. Every summer, Byrdcliffe provides over 60 visual, literary, and performing artists of exceptional talent uninterrupted creative time within the serene natural setting of the historic arts colony. While Individual cottage residencies are more autonomous by nature, artists-in-residence are invited to participate in all programming opportunities offered during the summer. Additionally, participants will be able to exhibit work the following year as part of Byrdcliffe’s annual Artist-in-Residence showcase.

Our co-founder, Ralph Radcliffe Whitehead, founded Byrdcliffe back in 1902 as a utopian artist colony with a threefold mission: 1) To produce handmade objects that would finance the colony, 2) To offer classes in all crafts to invest towards future generations, and 3) To provide a healthful and self- sustaining environment seeped in the beauty and simplicity of the rural landscape.
On discovering the parcel of land that would soon become the Byrdcliffe Arts Colony, Ralph wrote to Jane, his wife and co-founder, “We have found a country with a sky - such beauty of sky I have not seen … Such a sky for any painter, a transparent blue with wonderful gradation towards the horizon and such beauty of cloud forms and of distant blue landscape as I never excepted to see in N. Y. State. … Here is an atmosphere for you, dear”.
Since its inception, Byrdcliffe has undergone numerous configurations, but Whitehead’s vision of a community of artists still exists today - over 120 years later.
The Byrdcliffe artist residency stands true to its roots, offering residencies to a myriad of different artistic disciplines classified under the Visual, Literary, and Performing arts fields.
