Woodstock Community Choir

Woodstock Community Choir The Woodstock Community Choir is the official choir of the City of Woodstock, Illinois. Every voice matters, and each singer brings a unique spark to the stage.

For more than a decade, the choir has been a welcoming space where music brings people together and strengthens community bonds. Our ensemble is diverse, lively, and supportive—we laugh together, learn together, and create not only beautiful music, but meaningful, lasting relationships. The choir performs two concerts a year—in the spring and fall—as well as several civic events throughout the yea

r including the Lighting of the Square ceremony in November. Our performances showcase the full choir as well as the individual talents of our members through solos, duets, and small ensemble performances. We hope our spirit of camaraderie, community, and love of music is felt by—and inspires—everyone who joins us at our performances. As a 501c(3) non-profit organization, the Woodstock Community Choir remains dedicated to its mission of “Building Community Through Singing!” For more information, please visit their website at woodstockcommunitychor.org. 🎵🌟

This week, we're thinking of Dolly Parton — a songwriter whose music helped shape the American songbook we're celebrating this season. From heartfelt ballads to timeless storytelling, her influence runs through so much of the folk and country tradition Roots & Rhythm draws from.

Thank you for the music, Dolly. It will keep being sung.

Gospel music is the root beneath so much of the American songbook. A radio documentary, The Gospel Roots of Rock and Soul, traces that throughline across some of the biggest names in American music — Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, James Brown, Al Green, and yes, even Elvis Presley.

Different genres, same root — and a reminder of just how much we owe to the Black gospel tradition at the heart of it all.

It's exactly the kind of connection we love exploring for Roots & Rhythm. Worth a listen if you've got the time.

As we continue preparing for our Roots & Rhythm fall season, here's a question worth exploring: Is the blues the mother of all modern music?

PBS makes a compelling case. From the Mississippi Delta to Chicago to the British Invasion — it's all connected. A great watch, we hope you check it out.

🎥

We explore where the blues came from and its influence on many modern genres of music.

As we look ahead to our fall concert — Roots & Rhythm — we've been thinking a lot about the deep history of gospel, blues, folk, and rock and roll.

Here's a story worth knowing. Before Elvis, before Chuck Berry, there was Sister Rosetta Tharpe — a Black gospel singer from Arkansas who was instrumental in the development of rock and roll guitar, and whose name most people don't know. Check out her story in this wonderful article from NPR.

A musician who broke every norm, Tharpe turned rock 'n' roll from a burgeoning musical style into an international sensation. She was — and is — an unmatched artist.
