Heart Repertory Theatre Presents: Lauren Gunderson’s Toil and Trouble
Expires: July 22, 2026
About the Project
Toil and Trouble Synopsis.
Three underemployed friends—Adam, Matt, and Beth—decide that instead of going back to grad school or accepting dead‑end jobs, they’ll solve the recession by taking over a tiny South American island. Their half‑baked coup spirals when a fortune cookie convinces Matt he’s destined to rule and Beth becomes a little too enthusiastic with Macbeth‑style ambition and weaponry. Friendship, ego, and delusion collide in this fast, modern black comedy about power, fate, and very bad plans. Lauren Gundersons uber-capitalist hipster reimagining of Macbeth.

Character Breakdown
Adam
Ambitious, hyper‑analytical, and convinced that success can be gamified, Adam treats life like a strategic business simulation. He clings to his MBA identity—literally wearing a tie at all times—and believes he’s destined for greatness despite being unemployed. His certainty masks deep insecurity, making him both ridiculous and oddly sympathetic.
Matt
A history major with no prospects and even less direction, Matt is the skeptic of the trio—quick to puncture Adam’s theories but unable to generate any of his own. A fortune cookie’s prophecy that he “will rule” ignites his dormant ambition and pushes him toward Macbeth‑like delusion. His arc swings from slacker cynicism to comic, self‑serious destiny‑seeker.
Beth
Smart, sharp‑tongued, and the only one with an actual job—until she loses it in a spectacular on‑air meltdown—Beth is the group’s most grounded member until ambition and frustration twist her into a modern Lady Macbeth. She’s bold, impulsive, and surprisingly dangerous once she gets “a little too handy with a dagger.” Her drive is both admirable and alarming.
