Purple Crayon is just for women (and by "women," we mean anybody who identifies as a woman),18 and older. Thi

s allows members to enjoy something most don’t get a lot of: girl-time. You also won’t find many professional artists at Purple Crayon. Though they’re welcome to join, most of our members create art for fun; not to make a living. There’s no sense of urgency or competition here; just lots of playfulness!
..In a fun, supportive environment
Purple Crayon is designed to encourage members to interact—when they want, of course. The space even has a lounge and library where members can kick off their shoes and catch up on the latest “scoop,” or share a bite to eat. We also offer occasional community building activities, like pot-lucks and monthly birthday celebrations.
..As well as gain new skills through educational workshops and events
Purple Crayon holds regular workshops and events that are open to the public. They range from two-hour introductory classes to weekend-long intensives, and span everything from Acrylics to Zentangle.

As always, I was the last to finish my handmade journal with removable pages at Joyce Tromba’s Purple Crayon workshop today. It was worth it, though, as I took home something that was both attractive and useful, and the other students did, too! It was a fun way to spend the day!

Saturday’s Tissue Paper Luminarias workshop at Purple Crayon was absolutely de-LIGHT-ful! As always, instructor Cheri Epstein did a wonderful job guiding us through the process. It was probably the third or fourth time I’ve sat in on the class, and I still enjoyed the heck out of it!

I can’t believe I’d ever actually say this, but kudzu is the bomb— at least when you use it to make baskets, as we did in today’s Kudzu Basket workshop at Purple Crayon. Carleigh Fairchild took us through the process and made the experience so much fun! She’ll be teaching a Square Basket class this fall at the studio. I hope you’ll consider joining us!

One of the highlights of my year is the Purple Crayon annual art retreat. This is the third year we’ve done it, and, each year, it gets better and better! This year, it was held at the NuWray Hotel/Burnsville Town Center in Burnsville, NC. And, once again, we were privileged to have the incredibly talented Bridget Benton facilitate the event. There were so many amazing, magical, and inspiring moments that I lost count. I’m already planning for 2027!

Leave it to mixed media artist Kim Smith to figure out that lint rollers and plastic dinosaurs could make great mark making tools! So clever! Those were just some of the many “toys” she provided students in her Mini Art Journal workshop last Saturday at Purple Crayon. Everyone had tons of fun and walked away with a really sweet piece of art that they can easily replicate on their own.
