My gaze fell upon the side yard, hoping the Halloween Muses turn their gaze once again in my direction. It’s become an evening ritual for me as The Big Day approaches.
I wasn’t worried. I’ve repeated this ritual many times before as the Halloweens came and go. And despite the creeping pressures that come with planning The Big Show, I felt an unusual calm befall me. As I contemplated this sensation, my vision clouded as an unexpected mist rose from the ground.
OK, that’s different.
Assessing this odd situation, movement drew my eyes to my left. A ghostly, almost ethereal figure appeared at my side. A skeletal phantom dressed as a 17th century gentlemen caller stood motionless, as if looking for something in the mists.
OK, why am I not fleeing in terror at this very moment?
Although startled by this skeletal visitor from the mists, I turned my head and stared unflinching into his dark eyeless sockets. His gaze passed through me as if I were a window, fixated on some invisible, intangible element within the mists that on,y he could see.
And despite his skeletal nature, his chest rose as if inhaling the very mists that surrounded us. I could imagine his nostrils flaring as he breathed in the misty air, but all that remained of his nose was 2 bony slits. It’s as if he tasted not only the mists, but also the hidden object that transfixed his attention on my yard. I stood my ground, waiting.
“The spirit is strong in this one”, my spectral companion uttered in a whispery voice to no one in particular. Despite a lack of attribution, I knew that not only did he refer to whatever held his gaze, but me as well. He continued:
‘I will dwell in this land for the Spirit resides here“.
With a wave of his hand - and before I could possibly react - he sank into the misty ground and disappeared. As if reading my mind, his voice echoed though the mists:
‘My name is Ded Skeleton, oh chosen one. Use our gift well. I will return upon the anointed hour”.
The mists dissolved and once again I could see my side yard.
Yes, quite a gift indeed.
Cool.
