This will be my last posting to TheArtLab84 as I move on to new adventures. I will greatly miss each and every student and coworker I have come to know during my time at Shawnee. I know I have left the art lab in good hands and look forward to seeing and hearing about all the creativity that will continue to flow at Shawnee. Here's a look at what we completed at Shawnee art camp this past week. Ceramic chameleon's, tie-dye, and block printing (ceramics will be ready to pickup in the elementary office June 25th). Art Camp is June 8 - 11 for students entering grades 7-12.

I just saw similar opportunities for $140 a week 😳 These are free to Shawnee students!!! The art camp runs the second week if June. Day 1 will be tye-dye and ceramics and day 2 will be t-shirt and block printing. Don't miss this awesome opportunity!!

Virtual Spring Concert coming soon!! You may notice some super neat surfboards in the recordings. Prek-5th grade artist competed to have their surfboards design chosen to be blown up and printed onto faux surfboards created by Ms. Heller and some of the highschool art students. The winning artist directed their class in the coloring process to complete the design as a group project. The winning designers also get to keep their surfboards!! Congrats!

Cobden High School's art teacher invited more than thirty-three schools in southern Illinois to compete in a sidewalk chalk competition.

Shawnee Jr-Sr High participated in the Southern Illinois Chalk Art Contest today, and everyone had a blast!! Here is a taste of high school artist created. The winners at the school level will have their art worked judged against other schools in the area for prizes including $50 gift certificates from Blick Art Materials.

HAPPY FIRST DAY OF SPRING!! It's been a crazy year. Shawnee elementary students have been getting their art classes in their classrooms. I create the lessons and videos and the teachers aides actually deliver the lessons to the students. I know they work so hard and I can't thank them enough for all their hard work. But, I got a little bit of sunshine a few weeks ago when 2nd grade got to come into the art lab for their art lesson. I immediately threw the original plan out because they were going to have the opportunity to PAINT! We just did a simple lesson with the short time frame but it was so fun! I love seeing their faces light up during resist painting, it's like magic when the watercolors roll away from the oil pastels.

In high school heritage arts class, students learned about motifs from different cultures and how to recognize the elements of art used by the cultures. Then they took their observations to a new level to create an original work of art utilizing their observations for reference.
