So this may be a long post. But today I competed at the USPA National Championships. I’ve really been keeping this meet under the radar because of everything I’ve been going through since my last meet. The pressure of preparing for a National meet 5 weeks after my last competition compelled me to skip the week long rest I usually take after a meet. With only one day rest after my previous meet I again trained hard and by that evening I was limping badly and knew I had overreached. Slowly recovering into the following week I again sustained an injury. This one more severe putting me on crutches unable to put weight on my right leg. Later that week at Michigan Motor City Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, I learned that my 68 year old knees will one day undoubtedly require a full replacement as currently they are bone on bone with no fluid separating the leg bone and the patella. To ease my current discomfort they gave my ailing knee a cortisone treatment and said I could resume training with no restrictions. News I had not expected to hear.

At this time I left for Florida to help my brother with some issues he had with a house he owns there. While in Florida I was overwhelmed with the number of ticks that were on me each time I went into the yard. Returning from Florida with a knee that was feeling better and better each day I resumed training. While I eased back into training the first couple of days at the end of that week I hit a 410 lb deadlift in the gym and felt strong I was again beginning to feel good about my progress and gaining confidence in what I could do at Nationals.

Later that same night I began to feel ill. And the next day at urgent care my worse fears about the ticks I brought home from Florida were confirmed. I had contacted Lyme Disease. With a massive headache, fever, chills , sore muscles, aching joints and incredible fatigue I began taking the prescribed antibiotics. With Nationals two weeks away I didn’t expect there was any chance I could compete that soon.

Within a week though I began to feel better and was even able to put together a couple of fairly easy workouts.

Determined to complete the journey I had started even with my training severely interrupted by all my health issues I pressed on and today I competed at USPA nationals. I did the best I could possibly hope for. I set no new State or National records and for the first time ever I left a meet with no first place medals.

But I competed and I completed the meet against all the obstacles that my health and life had thrown in my way. I left that meet having completed my first National meet with three second place silver medals and I’m as proud of those silver medals as any State or National record I’ve ever achieved because I overcame so much to earn them.

Where there is a will there is a way.
